"The fact that a law enforcement agency is selling a dangerous weapon is appalling," said Shikha Hamilton, president of the Michigan chapter of the Million Mom March, a gun control group

This just goes to show that even LE thinks the ban of '86 was a joke.

 Simply horrible! It was bought and paid for by the taxpayers,a taxpayer should be afforded the opportunity to buy it back. Good conservation of resources. I would pay $1,700 for it BTW! Obviously a mis-print on what a full auto would fetch! OTOH, Why are there people in our society that still believe honest citizens can't be trusted?

Probably not a misprint - for a never registered limited transfer weapon.

The article, mistakenly, reports that anything manufactured prior is grandfathered when in fact anything registered prior is grandfathered - big difference.

What was at the time my local Sheriff's had a never registered lovely commercial Thompson which they swapped with a Class III dealer for 3 full auto Mini 14. The parts less machine gun would have brought more on the market and they had a cash buyer but elected to go for a clean deal.

I think the $1,700.00 will become 17k reallllllyyyy fast when the auction begins.

Is it transferrable? The article stated a "machine gun permit" was required (whatever that means. Maybe they were thinking SOT?) and $1700 is closer to what post 86 samples would go for.

The fact that you are so ignorant yet vocal is appalling. Do you think the Michigan PD is going to sell a MG to some thug they'll just have to bust later and not go through the ATF process? You do know the process for legally obtaining a MG don't you? Oh you don't? Educate yourself.

    I like this line!

I am sure they mean semi-automatic, but I do realize it's the media!

Antigunners express disapproval when police departments sell off
surplus 870 Remington or Model 12 Winchester shotguns to federally
    licensed dealers.

The fact that a machine gun purchaser would likely be a Special
Occupation Taxpayer (federally licensed machinegun dealer) makes
no difference to them. They hate guns period. The only thing they
approve of is melting guns down to manhole covers.

So somebody at Fox contacted an anti-gun group for comment, where is the comment from the NRA or GOA in support?

    It's a full auto/select fire M-16

:) It reads at the top:
QUOTE: "LAPEER, Mich. — For sale: Collector quality, fully automatic M-16 :) in excellent condition. Never fired outside shooting range.

Buyer must have machine gun permit and have no criminal record. And deep pockets."..........

Saw a thread on arfcom referring to the same rifle. Here's the link to the Sherrif's website:

    http://www.county.lapeer.org/sheriff/m16sale.html

It does state that it's fully transferable on a Form 4. I'd expect it to go for $14k or so unless someone get's overzealous and overbids. I'm out of state. Wonder if they'll pay for the first transfer tax? hehe.

Well if they were expecting $1700 they'll be in for a pleasant surprise.
I wonder if the fact that it's to raise money to buy new gear for the PD will cause someone to pay far more than fair market value.

Can we own automatic weapons in MI? I didn't think it was legal in our state. I coul've sworn I read all autos were illegal somewhere in our state law.

That would be sweet - a NFA legal MG that HASN'T been beaten to death! I agree that $1,700 is lowballing big time, and I hope they get enough to cover whatever expenses they need covered.

    Where's that winning lottery ticket....:banghead:

Juna, it used to be only C&R machine guns were legal, but the state AG recently reinterpreted the state law and now all transferrable machine guns are ok.

The $1,700 price quoted in the article is a misprint. There was an article in the other Detroit paper that said $17,000. That's a more realistic price.

Damn. If I had it, I'd bid to win, then donate a couple of grand more for good luck.

Wonder how THAT would play in the press?

Of course, the antis are well within their rights to buy it and have it destroyed...

Wonder if they'll think that far, or if their panty-wetting fear blinds them.

    Bets, anyone?:neener:
