Cast bullets and load data - Oregon Trail

I've read in a few books (Lyman for 1) that cast bullets are great, cheap and function very well for informal target shooting, and I've seen the cost of 500 rounds 158gr 38spl for less then 23.00. What I can't find is load data. It looks like Oregon Trail has a book on load data and good prices.

Anyone have any experiance with Oregon Trail and/or the data book? I don't want to cast my own at this point, but I'll buy them if I can get good data.

They make a nice product - hard cast, very consistent weights, hard lubed....use lead loading data from any of the powder companies.

Good bullets, good load book and great accuracy. Since I don't cast but want a good quality bullet I started doing the Oregon Trail route. No regrets, no problems, just reliable performance.


What more can you ask for?

Lyman publishes a very good load data book with data for cast bullets as well as jacketed. The powder companies websites have free data that includes data for cast bullets using their powder, try Alliant, Accurate as well as the combined site from Hodgdon. Speer and Hornady have data for their lead bullets that are just as applicable to cast bullets.

I have a Oregon Trail (Laser Cast) load manual. It's okay, but I find myself using one of my Lyman manuals more often when loading cast bullets. I'm not a real big fan of Oregon Trail's harder than the back of my head, bevel-based cast bullets anyway. But that's probably just me - a lot of shooters seem to have pretty good results with them.

I've seen in my Lyman Handgun book data for some cast bullets, but I'm still kind of new at this and I'm not up to substituting similar bullets in load data. I'd rather keep to specific recipies a little while longer.

some manuals only use the (L) to inidcate cast lead bullets,so this may have you thinking they don't have lead bullet data.
I think any lead bullet of the same wight can use data for another brandof bullet of the same weight.
I buy Laser Cast qutie a bit as they are readily available at my local shop..saves shipping costs,and I get to visit a gunstore.

Can't speak for the bullet performance yet, but their customer service has been outstanding in my case. Aprox 700 rds of their 230 gr 45ACP offering was included with a press I bought a while back. A email resulted in many pages of material to my door in a couple of days that answered all questions.

I called Oregon Trail (Laser Cast) and they will send you load data for the caliber you purchase. Also, they will offer you 6 bullets to sample of up to 3 choices. Finally, they sell in quantities of 100 but you don't save as much.

Anyway this is all good news. I'll get my order in a few days and try my first cast loads.

I have had good luck with Oregon Trail bullets. I use The Complete Reloading manuals and use cast load data. Most powder manufactures and a lot of bullet manufactures are represented in these manuals. They are caliber specific and well worth the six or seven bucks that they cost.
