This is an odd topic and I was not sure where to put it but we'll start here I guess.

I live in Illinois, last State in the Union to address the concealed carry issue - we get ours in a few months and applications are being accepted. We have to complete 16 hours of training and a shooting proficiency test. $150 fee and we have to already have an FOID card

I work in Iowa and have several coworkers who have Iowa concealed carry permits. In Iowa you need 2 hours of class and no proficiency. I was talking to guys who have their permits and was shocked to discover that only 1 of the dozen Iowa CCW holders where I work have actually carried concealed and the 1 that did only does it "if he thinks he might need a gun". :what:

Me personally? I have been training like a maniac in preparation for my classes and tests and I will carry all the time, everywhere I can legally carry and attempt to be the very best example of a CCL candidate. I can't imagine having the right and license to carry and not doing it. So my question is this: In THR Forumites opinion, why would someone get a permit and not carry?

Also, how many folks who have permits/licenses do you think actually carry on a regular basis as a percentage? Half of them? 10% of them? I guess I'm kinda shocked and scratching my head about why someone would get the permit and fulfill the requirements and pay for the paper and then not carry.

I am interested in your views and perspective. And Thanks in Advance for it!

Interesting. Everyone I know that has a permit carries routinely. Pretty much the only time I don't is if it legally restricted or highly inconvenient.

This has always baffled me. When I took my CCP class about 18 or so years ago, I went with 3 friends. Today, I am the only one who still has a valid permit and carries. The others never really did carry and let their permits lapse.

I work in I.T. and get moved around to different buildings and departments for the County government I work for. One of the only times I don't carry is when I am working at the jail since it gets very tedious to check it every few minutes when I am going into restricted areas.

The only other time is when I am at church. Per Utah law, I am not legally able to carry into my church.

In Texas, an informal survey of CHL holders about 8 years back indicated that 80% didn't carry. They just wanted a 'car' gun.

That is silly as the law was passed in part because Dr. Gratia-Hupp's gun was in her car and she could stop the Killeen, TX Luby's rampage.

I carry everywhere it's legal, but most the people I know that have carry permits only carry every now and then i.e. when they might need it.

I can't think of anyone I know with a CHL that doesn't always carry.

But then, most everyone I associate with are "gun people".

I carry any time I can legally and always have one cabled to the seat in the auto. I carry at church with the full permission of our head Pastor and play in the praise band. There are at least 3 of us who carry all the time in the praise band .

I guess I carry about 95% of the time overall.

I carry everywhere except work. It's acceptable for a visitor to carry there, but not employees. That prevents me from carrying on public transport, which is when I feel like I need it. When I take the train, I risk my job and carry those days. My retired friends carry all the time.

I carry just about everywhere I go. I can't think of the last place I didn't but it was probably the courthouse or something like that.

Now my wife has her carry permit, but doesn't carry anymore. A brain injury has affected the part of her brain that controls her short term memory so she's just elected to not carry, but she's not going to give up her permit. Man, she is PROUD of that thing. One of the first things she did after she escaped from the Chicago area was get her CHP here in Virginia. But until the injury, she carried everywhere also.

    Awesome responses, Guys! :)

But I'm more curious about the folks around you that have permits and licenses....I'd expect most of us "Gun Nuts" to have our pistols whenever possible. But what bout the "average" folks around you that have paper to carry?

    Do they?

I'll be honest, I rarely carry anymore. For legal reasons I can't even have it with me on the way to work or home from work, and the hobby I spend the most time with lately is martial arts where I cant really carry either. So I carry maybe 10% of the time when I'm out.

If I got a new job I would probably carry more like 80%.

maybe 1/4 of the people I know have a ccw permit. of that only about half actually carry; the other half leave it in the car/truck if they even bring it. heck, I know cops who don't even carry off duty.

In Pennsylvania the list of prohibited places is extremely short. That said I carry all day everyday I am legally able to.

PA has a no stops clause and only a few predefined destinations for unlicensed transport of a pistol.

I know a few who have their LTCF so they can stop for gas or whatever between home and the range but don't carry.

If I was going somewhere that I thought I NEEDED a gun, I wouldn't go there. We don't carry to go picking fights, we carry to defend ourselves from bad guys who are

My wife and I are the exception I think. We always carry but of the folks at church who could carry we are the only ones who do. I have a large family and all carry but their friends mostly don't. So my experience would indicate that most who can don.t

I don't know of anybody else who has a permit other than my wife and I. I assume a fair number of people do, but I've never asked them. They've never asked me.

I "transport" in a fanny pack every day - I discipline myself to "strap it on"

I can think of 11 people that I know have or have had a Texas CHL. Of those 11, 1 carried daily until his death, 1 carries rarely, 2 carried daily for about a year or two and then stopped, and the rest never carried at all. Five of them took the course for social reasons, having never shown an interest in firearms prior to the course. One of them took the course and got the license, despite having never owned a firearm due to the wife prohibiting it.

I've carried every day that I legally could since I got my first permit in Arizona. Here in Alaska, I would guess the percentage of people who carry daily is higher than average, but with a permit not being required it is hard to know.

    Funny story.
My friend, his wife and two oldest boys have their CHL.

Last year the wife and her three boys were in their Jeep. The second oldest boy was driving.
They were pulled over for speeding.

The boy gave the Officer his Driver's License and CHL and said I have a gun on me.

Even though he didn't have to do it, the oldest brother told the Officer,
I also have a CHL and have my gun on me.

Then the wife told the Officer,
I to have a CHL and I'm carrying a gun.

By now the Officer is cracking up laughing.

He asked the Wife if the youngest son had a CHL and gun also?

She said, No, he's only 13 but he's been shooting since he was 6 and could easily pass the CHL class but he's too young.

The Officer laughing, told them they can go, they certainly are well armed.

I can imagine the Officer telling that story to his buddies. :D

I have had to draw three times.....

It's gonna be fascinating to see how many folks here in Illinois who get their CCL actually avail themselves of the opportunity. Classes are packed here and while there isn't really a waiting list the classes are jam packed and tens of thousands are applying.

It was a little hard for me to believe folks might pay $150 and another couple hundred for classes and ammunition and then not actually carry when they get their licenses but now I'm curious.

I guess it's all perspective. We have been denied the right to do it even though it *is* our right for so long I thought more folks would want to exercise it and flex their rights and options a little more...then again, I wonder how many folks actually vote anymore as well.
