Today my dad for the first time in a while got caught ccw'n (he hasn't carried for a while and decided to again :). No he did not print or let his cover garment ride up, he got a hug from my grandma (his mom) and she felt the Taurus 85UL on his hip IWB. She got mad because my dad is now retired law enforcement and she hated it so she wants him to leave everything behind including guns!!!! :barf:

My qustion is how to avoid this from happening without refusing to show love to you family! lol

Thanks everyone!

For moderators, I posted this in the general gun section so it could get more exposure from THR members as I assume it is a big problem for CCW"rs

I never understood why family members would take offense to the fact that you're trying to protect them from harm and keep them safe...

I had my going away party after work Wednesday night. Since one of my troops is rabidly anti-gun, I decided to CCW three pistols to the restaurant that night (I love messing with him like that); a Colt CCO in an IWB holster, a Sig P245 in a SmartCarry holster, and a Colt Government .380 in a pocket holster. At the end of the party, everyone came by to hug me, three or four people bumped my IWB pistol. No one said anything or asked what that was.

My girlfriend also used to bump my IWB occasionally, she rarely said anything. She just accepted it as me being me.

Just keep it covered and if anyone who would get loud or mad asks, it's your cell phone on a belt clip.

I know, I think that it has to do with the fact that her ex husband was a cop with a huge gun collection and was also a gun show only FFL that abused her.

You just can't win ya know!

Good idea with the cell phone thing IZinterrogator. Now what about a full sized Glock 22 or even a Desert Eagle??? lol :)

When hugging folks (girls) I don't know real well, I always aim my arms for their waist. This forces them to go for an around the neck hug, keeping their paws off my pistol.

On a side note, my best CCW moment came from this kind of situation. My Cousin's daughter ran up and hugged me on a visit when she was about 4. Being only waist tall she hugged right on my pistol. Being 4, she wanted to know what it was. So I told her it was my gun, and she asked why I carried a gun. I tried to answer her without starting a debate, so I told her I had it to protect my family. She pondered this for a few seconds, then turned to her father and asked, "Daddy, why don't you have a gun to protect your family?"

I nearly died tring not to laugh.

I was mother's day shopping with my daughter and while waiting for the sales person to ring us up, my 6 year old daughter suddenly felt the need to give me an intense hugs (which from her are more like tackles). Her being not quite waist tall on me, I've developed an instinct of watching for the signs of an impending hug and pivoting to protect my sensitive areas. So, when she came at me, I turned and her head hit the Ruger P89 lurking just under my shirt with a resounding thwack! We had talked before about how she wasn't supposed to let anyone know I was carrying, so she just looked up at me and rubbed her head with a very confused look. I squatted down and gave her a hug and kissed it better, sales clerk never noticed a thing.

Most of the folks in my family who would hug me, are much shorter than me so a neck hug is usually out of the question without some sort of gymnastics. In the last month, my mom (very-anti) and my young cousin have both gotten a handful but I think they are both so gun-un-aware (that's kind of fun to say) they didn't know what it was.

I go to one of those really huggy churches and I find that simply turning my right side away from the hug usually works.

Although I did have an issue W/ one of the ushers that was obviously looking for my gun everytime he gave me a hug. oddly enough he never found it.

Priceless!!!!

"Daddy, why don't you have a gun to protect your family?"
Outstanding! Hopefully she'll grow up remembering that.
I agree with the arms low, around the waist so theirs go higher. If you do the one-armed pat on the back hug, strong side away from them. If walking side by side, again, gun side away from them to avoid the steely protrusion and the ineveitable "ouch, what's that?" bump.

Why should you have to adjust your lifestyle and what you do to cater to others? You are doing it for them as much as yourself, if they dont get that too bad. Be true to yourself and if they can not accept your decisions in life is that really YOUR problem?

Your first mistake is allowing people to hug you. It allows them access to shank your kidneys or grapple you. Also, in a public place, it can set you up for an attack. There is no reason for adults to hug. It puts you at a tactical disadvantage.

Good point! Any physical contact by non-immediate family members should be viewed as an attack and should be dealt with accordingly!:scrutiny:

:p:D

Best reply ever Jorg!

You know, I hope someone loves you! Hugs from adult friends can really make your day if your down! Tactical, Smactical! If your hugging them you can smack em down in a heart beat!!:banghead::cool:

Going in low usually works. Problem is, if you're 6'4" like me, there are some folks who just aren't going to be able to reach up to my neck. Other solution is to turn your left side to them and do a half-hug- that's my usual technique.

Hug attacks are not limited to non-immediate family members. It is prudent to avoid contact even with family members, even children. While one might think it is extremely unlikely a very young family member (under the age of 5) would participate in such an attack, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of group attack. Even with only improvised weapons at their disposal, small groups of toddlers can prove quite dangerous.

I imagine that "death by crayon" is one of the worst ways to depart this world...
