CCW as President of USA?

I think Camp David has a range, but it's pretty exclusive to President and guests only. Many Presidents have done skeet and trap shooting there. Safe enough for the secret service I'm sure.

I think this picture has been posted here before.

Supposedly, though, this is Hyannis Port, not Camp David. And I don't think it's trap or skeet; that looks like a Browning semi-auto .22.

Isn't anybody else here old enough to remember Fidel Castro carrying a gun, open carry no less dressed in his fatigues, into the UN and speaking there while open carrying?

To play the game, as far as the Prez, I seem to remember him also being the commander in chief, a military man, so I would think no other requirements for him to carry.

As an aside, I also remember politicians in NYC illegally possessing guns for the benefit of a news photo op (showing how easily guns are obtained illegally).

Charges brought? Don't be rediculous. DAs are politicians too.

Is that Kevin Costner in the sunglasses next to JFK in that photo above, posted by toivo? :) Sure looks like him.

It does, except Kevin Costner would have been 6 or 7 years old at the time of this picture.

It's Gore Vidal, novelist and political curmudgeon. The man shooting the rifle is Tennessee Williams, playwright of A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, etc.

Plinking with the Prez... and they're all Democrats. This could never happen today.

JFK was, IMO, our last POTUS who was actually a gun enthusiast. He genuinely liked guns. Many photos attest to it.
Those who followed him were not gun enthusiasts. Some signed anti legislation as POTUS and/or as governors before becoming POTUS. For others, the best that can be said is that they did not actively work against us; though they also did nothing to undo damage done by their predecessors.
Whatever his other failings might have been, at least JFK was a gun guy.

They don't issue carry permits in DC. The White House is in DC. The president lives in the White House. Ergo, the president doesn't have a carry permit.

And of course, he obeys all of the laws and the Constitution of the United States. :D

I still like that story of Winston Churchill during WWII. Turns out, someone thought that his Scotland Yard bodyguards should be carrying something beefier than .38's in their revolvers so a discussion was made over arming them with 1911's. Churchill of course was present during this discussion. When he saw his bodyguards look at the 1911's like something that had crawled out from under a rock, he barked "Then give me one!"

Winston takes the 1911, inspects the mag before popping it back into the 1911, racks the slide, puts the thumb safety on and then puts it in the pocket of his greatcoat. Then I guess he goes out for a rally or something.

Sadly, the pocket holster the Prime Minister used that day to carry a Condition 1 1911 in his pocket has been lost in the mists of time.

As far as the legal part I am very sure that the President would be ok. Either through commander and chief status or by having one of the alphabet agencies basically deputize him as some sort of law enforcement.

As if if any of them would, that's a politics question. And yes of course I would.

I would too, but not open carry. Being POTUS is very much about image and I wouldn't want to cast myself in the same light as Castro, Arrafat, and some other historical turds who made it an integral part of their image to be seen armed.

If i was president of course i would carry. The POTUS has the same right to bear arms as the rest of us. What would i carry? Colt Combat Commander... and sp101 as a back up.

Joe D: Being POTUS is very much about image...

I agree, and I think it's high time the media-watching public saw an armed figure petting kittens, acting kindly towards children, comforting the families of disaster victims, and all the other presidential duties.

I'd point out about the historic turds you mentioned, they were not turds because they were armed. Their turdliness was far more than holster deep. Unless you'd call John Wayne or Tom Selleck a turd as well, I'd say being armed can reflect the character of the man.

Tom Selleck and John Wayne played movie characters who went about openly armed; these were in a genre where most male characters did so and the plot required it. Neither actor went about openly armed IRL to the best of my knowledge. Actors are not the characters they play.
Castro et. al. wore guns to emphasize their commitment to violence as a method to achieve their political goals.
POTUS is already the most powerful man on Urth. Strutting about wearing a gun runs a real risk of presenting an image of POTUS as a comic opera villain with control of the world's most powerful army.
POTUS has to lead this country in international politics. Promoting a friendly image for open carry domestically at the expense of that responsibility is not the kind of leadership I want. YMMV.

Teddy Roosevelt also had a custom build Wichester 94 with a silencer on it for shooting pest around the white house without alarming the neighors and he also packed a pistol in his pocket everywhere he went, and once a a run or walk with his SS bodyguards, he were back to get it. I wonder how much faith he had in other guys.

He once while in the white house took a Krag rifle with a knife bayonet and after two practice swings broke the rod bayonet of the new Sprindfields 1903. He did this to proove that the new bayonet of the 1903 was brittle and could be easily broke in combat. A veiwer to the white house at the timae said that is a presadent that can make a point.

Un-PC or something, but bHo carrying (i.e., having a license, other than just some sort of "I can because I'm President"), reminds me of the Chicago (or New York) mindset - "only the Politically Connected have lives worthy of protection...."

Regards.

If you search you can find Eleanor Roosevelt's pistol permit and pictures of her blazing away with some large SW revolvers.

I also heard that Teddy Roosevelt had a gun in his cumberband and it slipped out and hit the King of Spain on the toe.

Hubert Humphrey - VP - who ran for President - had a great quote about how the 2nd was a defense against tyranny.

It's a good bet Arafat had unloaded his pistol when he carried it into the UN. UN security probably forced him fearing someone would grab it from Arafat and poetically shoot Arafat with his own pistol. Countries other than Israel also didn't like him.

I'm thinking DC's Finest doesn't have jurisdiction over the White House property or the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. I don't feel like researching.

John Huntsman Jr. (Former UT governor) was one of Obama's big concerns for 2012 until he nominated him as U.S. ambassador to China. (I personally think this is the ONLY reason he offered him the job.) He has a Utah permit. As for the odds of him running for pres, it looks small for 2012, but better for 2016.

As for how practical it is for POTUS to carry, the Secret Service has a comprehensive plan for protecting him or her in the event of an attack. This plan does not include the subject fighting alongside them.

Time to wake the zombie thread for the new members to read.

Ok enough about how the current US president isn't into firearms. He's probably going to be a one term president just like Jimmy Carter. Move on.

Anyone hear about leaders from other countries (other than Churchill) who carried a firearm?

I'm sure Mannerheim from Finland did. Though as Military Commander it's kind of part of the uniform.

Anyone else have stories of leaders past or present to tell?

Rick Perry carries one at least some of the time as Governor of Texas. (He shot a coyote sometime semi-recently with his LCP while jogging with his dog, which inspired the "Coyote Special" edition of the LCP.)

RugerLCP800600.jpg

Also, the Texas Land Commissioner bragged about carrying a gun in his boot in his capaign ads.

I'm pretty certain the Secret Service would NOT want their package to be packing. But it's kind of a moot point when you're surrounded by a small army of Praetorians.

Putin carries a Siberian tiger, with a bear as backup.

From what I have read the USSS has an underground range in the vicinity of The White House. If I were POTUS I would be shooting with them everytime they qualified. I would also carry a Sig P229 in .357 Sig, just like their issue sidearm, so if somebody went down I could use their ammo or they could use mine. Maybe I would get a cool USSS nickname like "Shooter" or "Marksman" :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr
