You can get pretty satisfied from salad, nuts and fruit. And that's coming from someone who is a through and through meat eater.

 

Absolutely. Lean meat good! Empty carbs bad.

What I found important was choosing an amount of food I got for a day and sticking to it. If I got hungry I told myself to wait until scheduled calories.

Starving yourself doesn't work because a person will binge when willpower is low, and your body will go into starvation mode. You have to feed a fire to keep it burning.

I've just been in that boat. It did affect my carry also. I used to carry a Ruger SP101 IWB. After losing weight in my ass it was a painful gun to carry. That's when the XDs came in.

 

Well I’m 5’8” and 260 & carry a Glock 17L at 3:30 daily IWB with no problems. I easily carry a Glock 17 or 5” 1911 if I just want to mix it up occasionally. Finding the right holster is the key. This holster is from concealedconcept on eBay and was $35. Nothing I have tried is as comfortable and even the 17L with light i can forget I’m carrying after a while. Don’t forget a good belt.

 

I'm 6' 10" and 315 lbs. In the warmer months when I wish to believe I'm on vacation, I wear shorts or swimming trunks. Therefore, my only option is a pocket holster. My favorite pocket gun is the Glock 42 provided the pocket is deep enough. For shallower pockets the Kel-Tec P3AT works well.

Though the Kel-Tec is cheap, of the 380 Autos I've shot, it was the one that fed any kind of bullet I gave it; I have to be selective with the Glock 42.

For cooler weather where I'll be wearing a coat, a Glock 22 in a IWB holster or a Ruger Redhawk 44 Magnum in a crossdraw holster would be my favorite. A snubbie 357 Magnum in a paddle holster also works well.

6'-2", 310# (down from 470#). Mostly pocket carry a G-27 or smaller semi-auto in a modified De Santis Nemesis. A small ankle or boot gun for certain special occasions that might get exciting.

 

I carried a shield for the last two years, great ccw gun
I just switched to the kahr PM9 and CW9
Love both of them, the PM9 being smaller and more concealable
I shoot then both very well.
Carrying everyday is also about comfort, a good solid belt, and the right holster
I considered a 1911, and although I could have, if I wanted a .45, I would choose a kahr CW45 as others above have said

Smith & Wesson M&P 9C or M&P 40C ( the originals, not the M2.0 compact. They're about the size of a Glock 26/27 but with a little more magazine capacity)

Glock 43 (can also be had cheaply used)
Kahr MK9
Sig Sauer P239 (these are a little on the spendy side)

Personally I don't care for the Springfield XD because of anecdotal stories (more than a few) that I've heard about the gun completely locking up if something happens to the gun where the grip safety doesn't properly operate. After seeing the first couple of write ups about this, I tried running the slide on my XD Subcompact without depressing the grip safety, sure enough the slide doesn't run without disengaging the grip safety. The gun was shortly thereafter removed from my collection in favor of something different.

Pocket carry LCP daily. Have MP sheild in 40 cal and MP 380 all for carry but end up with LCP every day. Fits well in the pocket. I'm 6'1 and 280. Ct on this one and have 2nd gen open sites.

 

I do like the size of the lcp and the price to thanks for shareing.

 

Not a lot of love for the XD on this thread. Too bad.

My EDC has been an XD compact in 45 ACP for several years (4" barrel, 10+1 round capacity). Milt Sparks Versamax II holster, heavy gunbelt, at 4 o'clock IWB. Very reliable gun. Very comfortable rig for me (6'4" and 250#).

The XD mod 2 has better sights, slide release, and mag release than the mod 1. Both benefit from an upgraded PRP trigger, but that's just my preference.

I have a total of four XD mod 1s, 3 in 45 and one in 9mm. I've shot tens of thousands of rounds through them in training and practice. Without a single mechanical failure and only a handful of ammo-related stoppages total.

OP, your choice of the XD mod 2 will serve you well. Get one, shoot it a lot, get good with it, and don't look back!



(Oh, I have been known to drop a S&W snubby in a pocket holster into a pocket when I don't wear a belt, but that's rare.)

I'm 6' and overweight and I carry a Kahr PM45 in an Uncle Mike's in my pocket. When I lose some weight I have a High Noon Split Decision I use IWB.

 

I'm 6'3 and 238 lbs and since I live in Dallas Texas the vast majority of the time I wear a T-shirt and jeans or Carharts or a T-shirt and cargo shorts. There's only a couple months out of the year where it's cold and even then it's usually just light jacket weather.

The vast majority of the time I carry a much loved 3rd gen Glock 26 in a Galco Summer Comfort IWB leather holster.


With it I carry +2rd extensions (12 rds) and then I also carry two spare mags with +2 rd extends and I have another spare G17 mag with an X-Grip extension in the truck which just lengthens the grip and allows you to use its big brother's (G19/G17 or G23/G22 if you have a G27 .40 or G33 .357 Sig) mags in comfort. I put grip tape on that so it doesn't slide up and down pinching my pinkie finger or reloads.

The only time I really switch these days is if I'm going to the corner market or running a quick errand and in that case for my 'Milk Gun' (haha) I have a Walther PPS M1 with a 7-rd mags and two spare 8-rd mags.

 

I've heard this said a lot, but I don't think it's always true. I think it depends much more on your shape than your size.

If you're "linebacker big" (relatively muscular, shoulders wider than waist), then sure, go nuts. Your shirts will drape loosely because they're hung off the widest part. Plenty of room under there.

If you're "Santa Claus" big (waist wider than shoulders), the opposite is true. Because you slope outward from the top, no matter how loose your shirt, it will naturally drape against your body, or anything attached to it. Heavier (and thus stiffer) fabrics can help, but aren't very comfortable for a large part of the year around here.

On top of that, if you're bigger in the waist or gut (as I am), your belt line has a much more circular shape than someone of smaller stature (which tends to be more oval-shaped). That means that there are no "flatter" areas around your waist to tuck the grip up against. I can carry a full-sized pistol IWB and be perfectly comfortable, but the butt of the grip is always stuck out away from my body no matter where I place it. It makes a small bump when I stand, but if I bend over or sit down it's quite noticeable.

I've tried a lot of options. I live near and work in some very 2A-restrictive places, including some where, while carry is legal, if I was found to be carrying it would lead to some unpleasantness (up to and including losing my job). I am very aware of concealment. It just seems... unhelpful, when I shop for guns/gear and am looking at small guns and holsters, and everyone wants to say "you're a big guy, you can conceal anything! Why would you want a mouse gun like that?"

Well, no, no I can't. Not reliably. If I were just going out on the town, or to someone's house, sure, because what's the worst that can happen if it's noticed? I get asked to leave? No big deal. When my livelihood is at stake, not so much.

 

I too am in the tall and broad category, but I prefer to CC the smallest gun I have any confidence in. Having a body size advantage when it comes to concealment merely means that a small gun is smaller still, and all the more invisible.

The smallest gun I at all trust is the .38 snub, but I have been lately much tempted by the small Glocks. The G26 with finger rest magazines looks not much harder to hide than a K frame snub revolver and holds twice as many cartridges. This has made me go Hmmm.

But the progressive press is set up for .38's and I am accustomed to boring proficiency with the care and feeding of revolvers, and besides, if I stray into New York there is no magazine capacity jackboot to worry about.

 

I've about 5'10" and currently ~240#. I can carry a double stack compact with the right clothes and holster. With that said I prefer to carry a Sig P290RS single stack nine. It conceals and carries easier.

 

I admire your fortitude. For me after 2-3 days of salad, nuts and fruit I lose my will to live and end up binging on 5 Guys bacon cheeseburgers and fries.

 

Walther PPS M2 LE comes with one each 6, 7, and 8 round mag for around the same price or less than the Shield. I'm also a big XD fan. I also own a Shield, but prefer the PPS M2. Springfield just released the XDS Mod 2, or if you want a dbl stack, the XD Mod 2 Subcompact.

 

I guess I'll just have to get used to being fat...

 

This may sound extravagant to some but I have more than a couple of handguns (and mode of carry) I can select from when carrying one concealed, all dependent on context and circumstance. The state of dress (usually dictated by the weather or social circumstance) and the level of criminal activity in the neighborhood I'm frequenting are the main determinants for choosing the "pistol of the day" and where and how on my anatomy it is concealed.
I, too, am XL sized and I can comfortably tote a SIG Model 227 auto, chambered in .45 ACP, for those times I anticipate being in sketchy neighborhoods. When the temperature is high and the crime level is low, a Ruger LCP auto, chambered in .380 ACP fits this niche perfectly. Most other times, a vintage Colt Cobra snub-nose revolver, chambered in .38 Special or a Smith & Wesson Model 6906 auto, chambered in 9mm, goes along for the ride.
A good, sturdy belt and a well-designed holster goes a long way in making concealed carry more comfortable.
If I had to choose one of the (too) many handguns I own as my only pistol for edc, it would be the one I carried for many years in le; the uber-reliable Smith Model 6906.

 

I am also a Springfield fanboy. I "had" a XDS in 45 at one time but, after Arthur set in, it seemed to kick like a mule and got rid of it. Never fired a XDS in 9mm, might be alright.

The XD subcompact 9mm is a wonderful little gun, carries 13+1 with a 16 rd. spare mag. Sorry you have a 10 rd. limit.

The 1911 will always be my favorite but, I have several XD's.
If you carry an XD you might want to consider a Powder River Trigger. You would not believe the difference.

Since I have done the mental walkthrough of this scenario I’ll chip in:

The sig p365 looks awesome and I would take a chance on it. If you’re not comfortable with that my shield 9mm is nice and has been very reliable. I’m also sort of a Glock fanboi and a G26 is a great choice and fills out the hand nicely. Keep a spare magazine handy - 19 length for extra grip space. From experience I can say they really help with reloads even though they only hold 10. Makes a nice package.
