Century products can be a bit hit or miss. If the price is what's appealing to you, you may want to try the 'bargain bin' rifles from CMMG for $599, or you could spend about $50 more to get a brand new Double Star 16" HBAR from Bud's Gun shop.

At that price I'd avoid it like the plague. Not because it's crap, but because that Century name on the side is going to make it really difficult for you to ever sell it for more than $450 or so.

Spend just a few dollars more and get a rifle that you can sell for the same price you paid for it.

CFS has a Retro Century for $700. made with genuine Colt parts.

How about a build?

http://www.mapartsinc.com/products.asp?catId=79

Midlenth upper and 'KIT' $490

http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=104&zenid=qltik04mkcvpif54cn1hob8861

Stripped lower- $89
$30 trans fee
total without tax is $609.

That is everything you need. You only have to worry about the FFL for the lower. You will also gain a better understanding of your rifle. Not to mention, many people see the Century name on a product and 'avoid it like the plague'. Too many problems in the past.

They are really easy to build. I built my first lower with almost no tools. I found a video online.

I have owned Century products before. They don't have a great reputation.

I would take any other AR-15 over a Century (and you can get something better for that price)...just sayin'.

:)

Dad ended up with one of these in a trade. This one is new and one word that describes the entire rifle is

LOOSE

I personally wouldn't spend money on one. Especally when a DPMS sportical is the same money

+1 for the DPMS rifles. They have rifles in that price range and DPMS is a respected AR maker.

As with anything Century don't even think about buying it unless you can inspect it first. As has been pointed out you can do better for the same price or there abouts and get a real warranty and all new parts.

OTOH if you want Vietnam era parts except for the lower and barrel then maybe this is OK.

I've been basically been happy with Century guns, but I buy at gun shows and usually look at three or four before I find the one good enough to bring home.

Probably ok, but for that price, I would get a CMMG Bargain bin or save abit more for some other AR that is proven to be good-- My Stag 2 ran me $800 delivered NIB and it has no used parts like the CIA stuff..

I opened a Century once, with permission, of course. I tool one look, closed it, and put it back on the rack.

I wouldn't consider one at the $550 price tag that one had, for 700, I wouldnt even look at it.

I like it simply because of the A1 look. plus all the parts but the lower should be colt. unless i'm mistaken. if you want the look and don't trust century, get the parts kit from J&G or somewhere else, and get your favorite lower, and do what feels natural.

Actually I like Century and have four of their imports: an M44, SKS, WASR10 and Argentine FM Hi-Power. Maybe I was fortunate but each one was well worth the money and a keeper.

But when it comes to ARs I'd find something else for that price. In fact I'd build my own.

It's worth noting that of those four firearms, the only one that Century actually did work on (besides stamping their name as importer) was the WASR-10, and though not terrible those do have a rep for canted sights, sloppy magwells, etc.

There are some things Century does okay on, and there are some guns where Century is your only (or only affordable) option. However, given the huge number of AR-15 products out on the market, and that Century isn't any cheaper than many of those options, I'd be hard-pressed to favour Century.

(NOTE: I am buying a Century C93 HK clone, however, as those are half the price of a Vector V93, and get decent reviews.)

i got a wasr 10/63 from century(VERY happy with it, no problems so far, i think the gas block and the front sight has a very slight cant, but out of about 200rds no problems, just one failure to eject while bump fire) but anyway i think iam leaning torwards building my own, i would like to have one with a gas piston, what do u guys recommend?

Hello

How about a SARCO rifle kit for $475 + shipping and a stripped lower for $100

For a little over $600 you would have a better rifle. I just completed 3 builds using these rifle kits, and I was impressed with the quality. Even comes with a detachable carry handle with A2 sight for that price.

What comes with the Sarco kit?

Sounds like you'd be a bit closer to $700 than $600 (once you factor in your LPK and buttstock/extension tube/buffer assembly), but it would still be a damn sight better to spend the money on that than the Century rifle.

You could get a good rifle kit for around 500, then a quality lower for around 139 shipped, and then transfer fee for the lower... it would be less than 700 and have a quality AR. The only thing you would have to do is put the lower parts into the lower receiver and your all set. get a mag and some ammo and away you go...

I've got a lot of Century products myself, (mostly milsurps), but for the vast majority of them, the only thing Century did was stamp their name on the side per federal law.

Century gets a bit of a bad rap with the canted WASR sights, but this really has very little to do with Century. What Century does with the WASRs is auger out the magwell and swap out the trigger group and stock. They don't touch the sights. You can blame the canted sights on crappy Romanian manufacturing.

Century did turn out a bunch of bottom of the barrel FAL's, G3's and CETME's not that long ago though and trigger slap from their cruddy trigger groups used to be a major problem for their AK's too. A lot of those FAL's and CETMEs were real jammomatics.

The Yugo AK's that Century put out on the other hand were a really nice product. I shot a couple of them and when it came to accuracy they were the equal of Saigas. Century didn't actually build them though. They contracted that out to someone who apparently knew what they were doing and took pride in their work.

Bottom line is that Century has a spotty history when it comes to build quality and there are lots of other products out there from reputable makers in the same price range. It's one thing if you're buying a PSL and Century is the only game in town, but with the number of companies making AR's why go with the company with the bad reputation?
