Chambering a round repeatedly

I have a quick question. My HD pistol has a loaded mag but does not have one in the chamber. There has been a couple of times where I woke up to a bump in the night, and put one in the pipe. My question is how many times is too many? (Each time I switched the chambered round with the last one in the mag to avoid seating the bullet too far with repeated chamberings) I hope my question makes sense.

Every time you go to top off your magazine, check if there's any visible bullet setback. Check the round you are going to rechamber against a round that has not been chambered to make sure the bullet isn't noticeably farther back into the case.

How many is too many? IT varies with each individual gun and ammo type. For example, my Sig P232 is quite hard on Federal HydraShoks, only allowing about half a dozen chamberings or so before visible setback. I have since switched to Cor-Bon's load for carry.

I'm not sure if you'd see bullet setback if you looked, even with another round for comparison - could be imperceptible, but significant. True, depends on caliber and weapon, but I try not to chamber a round more than 3 times before it gets squeezed off at a practice session.
I can't remember if I read it here, or on some other forum, but someone mentioned a great idea that I've taken to:
Whenever you clear a round from the chamber, put a hash mark on the case with a sharpie. When a round accumulates 3 marks, shoot it (at the range).
Try to "shuffle" your rounds in the mag too. Peel off 3 or 4 rounds, and bury the rounds with hash marks in there before topping up on the mag again.

Most of the problems you will hear about are from LEs --they chamber and unchamber more then once about every day ---- I think if you are useing factory ammo , you are doing the right thing.

Good advise from 23Glock about marking the rounds --- I will start doing just that.
