Does anyone have real information about these rifles?

All the latest gun magazines/websites say the import ban has been removed and they will be available. Has anyone tried to order one yet?
How much off MSRP are they going for?

Are they true 98 Mauser actions or how much have they deviated?
What type scope mounts are needed? Will they accept military Mauser springs, firing pins etc for repair work?

I've been waiting a true Mauser action rifle for quite a while but also unwilling to butcher a military model or pay $1500 to have one built from the ground up.

Thanks.

Does anyone know of another message board where Mausers or Mauser actions are a more central topic? I am going to the local shop today that's listed as a dealer on the Daly website and will post any useful information.

Now that the shot show is over several distributors are saying the field grade models are here. I am going to order one this week.

I had to go back and research the Interarms Mark X to find what I was looking for but found that extractors, firing pins etc are interchangeable. Virtually every stock maker out there makes a stock to fit the X, including McMillian. The safety and the lack of a stripper clip guide are the two largest differences with the true 98 mauser.

From what I've heard, these are the Interarms Mark X units (Husquvarna Mauser-derived design, made in Yugoslavia). As such, they are traditional Mausers in every sense SAVE for the safety design - they have a two-position safety on the right side of the receiver as opposed to the traditional Mauser three-position safety. The only complaint that I've heard with this safety is that you can't render the trigger inoperative when cycling the bolt to unload the mag.

OK, I've got a question on these Charles Daly guns. On the non-barreled actions they list the calibers that they can used for as 7x57 through 30-06. Would the 6.5x55 be close enough to use with these actions? Or would it be too short? Personally, and perhaps irrationally, I'm enamoured with that Swedish cartridge and I want to eventually build a hunting rifle for my wife in that caliber as I believe it would be very close to optimal for her. Being that she's a southpaw it's kinda tough to find all up round rifles in that caliber with a lefty bolt action. But Daly sells lefty actions, so I figured this might just be the way to go if I can chamber it for the 6.5. Would this be a good idea or should I shop elsewhere?

Since that cartridge is Norwegian as well as Swedish, it's perfectly ok to enamoured with it. :)

The Charles Daly web site confirms that the rifles are made by Zastava in Yugoslavia. Zastava rifles are sold in Norway under their own name, and cartridge choice includes 6.5x55.

I don't know anything else about the rifles, but it wouldn't be very probable that there is any difference between those actions. Anyway, if it's long enough for the .30-06, it's long enough for the 6.5x55. Since Zastava chambers the cartridge for the Scandinavian market, maybe you could order a barreled action or rifle from Daly and save some work - unless you want to build your own for different reasons, of course.

I have no experience with the rifles, so I can't give any advice on whether they're a good buy.

M67 - Sorry, I'll refer to it as Scandanavian in the future :D .

Daly doesn't sell their barreled actions in the 6.5x55 chambering, at least not right now. I'll look into Zastava for a barreled action though. Main reason as I stated earlier for wanting to build my own is that lefty bolt actions in 6.5x55 are hard to come by, and this would a rifle for my wife (she really needs a lefty rifle to shoot with - she's tried right handed bolts before and they just don't work well for her). Since Daly lists left handed actions I thought that might be a place to start.

For a 6.5x55 and CZ 550 @ $450.00-500 new is hard to beat. I have one and I think it is very good value for the money. Decent stock, nice blueing, good trigger. Negatives are the lettering and engraving could be toned down a little it looks a little like a banner, and I wish there was an option to order one with a heavier barrel contour.

I looked at the Daly's on Brownells and did some home work on them. I heard they are a little on the rough side and not the same quality as the Interarms Mark X, I can't remember the source, but I will post if I find it. I would do a little digging before dropping dollars on this.

Your options may are limited in Left hand rifles and for a mauser it might be your only choice.

Other Mausers to check are Howa Legacy, CZ, BRNO ( good luck finding one ), and several high dollar custom types which don't sound like they fit your budget plan.

I have one of the new Daly actions and have been working on it for a while. It is, indeed, an Interarms Mark X replacement, albeit somewhat rougher. My 'smith is lapping ways, polishing rough spots, etc., for now. I have a Ex. grade English stock and a Shilen Bbl in .35 for a Whelen. It is yp to get Conetrol mounts and a Leupold 1.5-5x straight-tube scope. I put one of the Dakota striker safeties on it and the double-stage trigger from Germany. Many $ spent on this one :)

schromf - The CZ 550 is exactly what I'm looking at for myself. I called up CZ's KC office and talked to gal about getting one in lefty configuration. She said she'd been trying to get them to make the 550 for lefties for a while without success. And they apparently have no plans to so anytime soon. Their Model 3 will be available in left hand configuration, but that is only offered in 270 WSM, and 30 WSM at the moment. No plans to chamber it for a non-magnum anytime soon. I her told to put me down as a customer who wants a left handed 550.

Looked at the Zastava website and they aren't selling barreled actions in 6.5x55 either.

So what do you guys figure I'd be looking at to buy a barrel and chamber the action to 6.5x55 and then blue it all (the action comes in the white). I know the action itself will set me back close to $400 (inc. shipping and FFL transfer).

Once I get the action barreled and blued all I'd need is a stock, scope and scope mount. I'm thinking of making the stock myself, though I may change my mind on that.

I know this isn't what yor looking for but have you looked at the left hand versions of the Remington 700? A complete long action 700 rifle if you shop around is around $500.00 ( I think there is a slight premium on left handed versions).

Then get a new barrel, on a budget I would look at a couple but Shaw would be a good start. Brownells has some Douglas barrels but they would need to chambered, for around $170.

Another option is the Savage 111GL, then look at Midway for a Adams and Bennett barrel, they are $149.00 chambered in a 6.5x55. You can change the barrel yourself all you need is a headspace quage, and a barrel wrench.
The neat part about that is you end up with a swap barel gun and two rifles almost.

Just some other options.:)

I'll have to have my wife try out the Remington and Savage rifles. I personally don't care much for them as I'm a CRF kinda guy. When I explained the differences between CRF and PF to my wife she seemed to like the idea of CRF a lot more (and that was with me giving the caveat that for all practical purposes, absent dangerous game hunting, there was no real advantage to either type of bolt action). Once she tries out a couple Remingtons and Savages she might change her mind.

For my own purposes I was looking at a Rem 700 in 8x57, but then I found out about the Husquvarna sporting rifles in that caliber. They have a true Mauser action so I will probably go that route for a non-milsurp 8mm.

Please note, this in NOT a slam on PF rifles. Just not my personal preference.

Anyhoo, I'll look into those possibilities for building a lefty bolt action in 6.5x55.

Another option is the Winchester Model 70 Classic in left hand. Look:

http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodinfo/catalog/detail.asp?cat_id=535&type_id=026&cat=001C

This would be CRF, needed just the barrel work.

I am a fan of CRF also, and have been for years, but considering my deer rifles aren't dangerous game rifles, I have relaxed that requirement, and bought a couple of 700's, what I really like is how accuarate the 700 is with a little work, and the wealth of parts available. Its a trade off I know but a pretty good one in my mind.

I could probably build my own for $1000 or (easily) less, especially if I make the stock myself (something I'm very interested in doing as it would blend my gun and woodworking hobbies). It looks like if I went with the Daly action, and bought a barrel and had it chabered for 6.5x55, and then blued the whole thing and made my own stock I could probably get away from that for around $7-900. List price for the Daly action is $360, figure $25 for shipping and $20 for the FFL transfer fee. I have no idea what barrels that fit that action cost, but assume $150-200 for an unchambered 6.5mm tube, and maybe $1-200 to get it installed in the action, chambered and headspaced, and blued. Add $50-100 for the wood, and whole lotta hours and I'll have the stock.

If I wanted to save a lot of that work, I could just go with the M70 schromf suggested and rebarrel/rechamber for the 6.5x55. That would be about $675 plus the barrel work for a total of probably $850-1000.

I just wish I could find an off the shelf lefty bolt action that would fit my wife in 6.5x55. That would save a lot of work and expense. If she decides she'd prefers a .270 or something else that's easy enough to find that'll make life easier in that regard. I was just really hoping she'd want that 6.5mm so that when we go hunting we could share ammo, and if we had to (e.g. one rifle gets damaged) share the guns themselves without having to think about different ballistics.
