I have a steel 2 hander that's not worth anything but looks cool. I plan to polish it up and hang it on my wall. What are some cheap ways I could coat the metal so it won't rust? Something I could get at home depot or the like would be preferable.

Polishing itself is a good rust preventative. Having it in a cool dry place is another. Avoid handling it, too. Esp the blade. Don't know of a grease or wax that will still let it be a displace piece. Also a coat of light oil might help.

I would wipe it down with Breakfree CLP which can be found at most Walmarts. When it dries it will still have a coat of PTFE which should seal it.

Be sure it is CLP and not LP

Worked on nails with salt spray and have seen it do some pretty amazing things with weapons.

You might try this stuff. Atlanta Cutlery uses it on the swords sold by their Museum Replicas subdivision. It's worked well on the sword and dagger I have purchased from them.

As an alternative, you might try automotive car wax. It's cheaper and easy to use.

Museums use wax on their metallics all the time.

I believe Pirate Bob posted a link to some, but you could use Johnson's paste wax for all that.

Clear spray paint.

Paint is a barrier to oxygen and works surprisingly well. I have done this on a number of wall hangers. Just keep the dust off because that stuff holds water against the surface.

For long term storage I will grease the blade in RIG grease and roll it in wax paper. I tape the wax paper edges with clear tape. I have uncorked blades stored this way after ten years and they were perfect.

Go to the pharmacy and get some mineral oil. A thin, thin coat will protect from rust if left undisturbed. A $2 bottle will last pretty much your whole life.

Renaissance Wax is fairly expensive. But if you own firearms too, it is worth having some available in your box of supplies. A little goes a long way. Most any paste wax will work too. I would choose one with a high Carnuba content.

Polish it thoroughly. Wipe it down with something like rubbing alcohol. Spray it lightly with hairspray. This isn't something I'd do with a blade of value, but it works well for something that is just a hanger. it's important to make sure you have all the fingerprints off and to avoid touching the blade as you hang it. I've seen some ornamental stuff that hung for years with no corrosion that received this treatment.
