cheap M-1 Garand

"...will need an M-1 Garand to start with..." It'd take major reworking to convert an M1 receiver to mag feeding. And a sizeable chunk of money.
"into a rifle very capable of taking every game animal on the North American continent." Any .30-06 will do that.

I have already worked out how to do it.
I am aiming for range. If I just want something that will drop any land animal, I'd just get a regular old M-14.

You would destroy an American Icon to make some silly sniper rifle.

If this was a mosin thread everyone would be screaming destroyer of history.

I would just get a m1a reciever because, as stated above, garands are not m-14s

I guess I am not winning your favor by saying this, but icons mean nothing to me. You are talking to someone who traded a Mauser Broombhandle for a CZ-52 and is still happy with the deal.

I know this is an old thread. I only found it because I was cleaning my bookmarks, so I will revive it rather then start a new one.

By incredible luck, I finally got an M-1 Garand. It's a Springfield made in 1945. Funny thing is, I got it for $200. She came without any furniture, but it happened to be close to my birthday at the time and you can probably guess what happened from there.

Don't worry though guys. I don't intend to use this one for the project. I am digging the price and availability of .30-06 too much right now. I would rather just build that particular project gun over time in pieces.

Anyway, here she is:
