Hello,
I've always been into firearm modification (legal of course) semi-auto mainly. I have some experience with SKS's and I was wondering If anyone had any suggestions for some cheap semi-auto handguns or rifles (anything under $200) that I could to modify.

Thanks,
Phil

What sort of mods are you looking to do? Some guns are more suited to certain mods than others.

Also, you're likely going to find yourself pretty limited in that price range. I'm not sure I'd want to do much to a gun that cheap, for fear of making it even more likely to fail under use.

Most of the modifications I do are barrel shortening, stocks, mags, sights, compliance parts, chrome/duracoat/blueing, accessories, etc. I'm mainly looking for mil. surplus guns old eastern bloc and communist weapons, I prefer the 7.62x39 and 9x19mm rounds. I was just trying to get some ideas of any weapons like this that weren't too costly.

I've looked at the Saiga's a lot and I really like them, but here in the last few years the prices have spiked tremendously, and I can't seem to find much of anything under $500.

Haha, Nope my friend's do not call me Bubba, I carefully plan out all of my modifications and do everything legally by the book. They are all done exactly as they should be, and when I get done with a gun it looks thats what it was meant to look like.

PR - you're really not going to have much luck with milsurp handguns in that price range, especially if you're looking for them in a shop and not receiving them direct from wholesalers via a C&R license. Just as SKS's have gone up in price, so have the more common milsurp pistols. A quick google search found one or two instances of Makarov's or P83's for under $200, but in general you're looking more in the $250 and up range.

Not semi-auto, but Mosins are around $100 and some members have done some really cool things with them. Especially with your normal mods.

The mini-Tokarev sounds cool, I've looked at them a little, and you can pick them up pretty cheap too.

I would maybe try engraving or pistolsmithing on a zymak gun, zinc is softer than steel, and you mess up, your out, what $50??

But I wouldn't expect great things from one, on the other hand, a quality gun like a used Milsup or even police turn in, provides both quality and affordability.

The M 70 is a cut down tokarev design, in .32
So, all you have to do is make the full size (think about it, same barrel) recoil system fit.

All over the Tampa Bay area I can find Astra Cubs like mine for about $130-175 depending on condition. They're tiny, but they'll engrave nicely.

This one isn't mine...mine has better finish (less plum) and rosewood grips.

They (the astra cub, colt jr. etc.) are based off the 1914/ruby type action, which is a simplified Browning 1903, So maybe try to find a small gun like the 1903 or vest pocket.

Also FIE and a few others imported them or the Itialian versions (berreta or clones)
