I am new to shooting reproduction rifled muskets and am wondering about the cheapest way to lube Minnies? Specifically for .58 cal bullets. Isn't there a push through hand press that you can use in the field? Is bore butter sufficient as a lube? Thanks for all suggestions.

I always pan lubed mine. Set the bullets in a shallow container, melt lube & pour around bullets to the desired hepth, let lube set/cool, remove lube 'cake' from pan & then push bullets out.....only the lube in the grooves will be left behind.

By the way; I don't cast yet

I don't cast bullets yet. I buy them off track of the wolf.

If they come unlubed from TOTW either of the above methods will work fine, but you'll 'shave' more lube off the bullets when loading with the dipped method.

While it may not be the cheapest, Pedersoli makes a little gadget that will lube those grease grooves very nicely.

A friend used to wipe "Bore Butter" he used for over the ball on his 1858 revolver with his fingers into the grooves immediately before loading.

Seemed to work for shooting at the range just fine.

Don't make it complicated just fill the base with Crisco and for better loading and shooting size bullet down 1 thousandth under bore size for example I shoot .451 in a .452 bors

A while back I made some balls and rolled them around in the pan i'd just fried up some bacon in... later that day, at the range, the guy next to me turns and says, "I know black powder smells like rotten eggs, but i'm losing my mind because i'm smelling bacon too!"

Several years ago, I saw a tool for lubing 58 minnie balls. It was plastic and screwed on a TC Bore Butter tube. The minnie was pushed thru the hole, while lube was supplied by squeezing the tube. It worked sorta like the Lee push thru sizing die that screws into a reloading press.
The grease grooves were filled using this tool.
I fill the base of my Lyman 577611 minnie with Bore Butter by hand and also the grease grooves. They shoot OK, but found the second shot impacts a few inches lower at 100 yards, with a dirty barrel. If the barrel is cleaned between shots, they all hit in the "same spot" or close.
Hunting elk with it for years and only got the second shot once.
I load a card wad over the powder, then a lubed felt wad, then lubed minnie, then another card wad. Without the card wad, the minnie tends to work toward the muzzle when trail carrying. November elk in Oregon Cascade Mtns tends to get your powder damp. Electrician tape over the muzzle helps keep out the weather (rain, fog and snow).
Rifle= Navy Arms Hawkin Hunter with slug barrel, stout load of 3F powder, musket cap and the Lyman 577611 home cast minnie. Peep sights as no scopes allowed here.
75 yard shot on cow elk.

I pan lube with SPG http://www.blackpowderspg.com/spglube.html after pushing the Minie's through a sizer so they'll push down the barrel easily. As cast...they're a bit big and hard to get started, but after sizing they push in with a thumb and down the barrel with the ramrod without effort when it's clean...a little harder after a few shots. The SPG works well...and I leave the hollow base full which seems to provide plenty of lube to the muzzle.

I'm with Bonza and RecoilRob on Pan Lubing. Make sure you use a pan that you can heat to melt and reuse the excess lube after you pull out the slugs. This also works great if you are making minie balls for paper wrapped cartridges to use in revolvers and breechloaders.

CHEAPEST EASIEST JUST CRISCO IN THE BASE. Did it for years in N-SSA have since went w a inside outside luber sold by Northeast trader. a lot of my friends still do just crisco in the base

Like recoil rob, I use SPG to fill the grooves, and place in plastic baggie for range use. Can usually get 3-5 shots off before having to swab the bore.

For shooting Lamarmora (737) with my Enfield 3 band and Minie. I use TC Bore Butter, Traditions Wonderlube or Ox-Yoke according arrivals and availability...
Sometimes a blue grease that I get by a gunsmith he doesn't say what is the recipe of it but it works pretty good (the grease I mean not the gunsmith)...
I put the grease just before firing, before each serie of 13 balls directly from the tube or the pot...
