a knife can fly in checked luggage all day. I brought swords back from califorina to ohio, then to japan.
A few years back a saw a guy nonchalantly sitting on a bench on Michigan Ave with a katana strapped to his back. I'm not sure if the CPD ended up hassling him or not.
About ten years ago, I saw my relatives for the first time in 13 years. I drove to my cousin's place in Humboldt Park and waited for her to come downstairs. When she got in, I asked her why there were candles next to the apartment doorway. She replied, "Those are for 'Manuel' who got shot there."
Agreed that no place is perfectly safe (demonstrated by the random beatings in Lincoln Park a few months ago), but Humboldt Park is one of the worst places you can go on the North side. Unfortunately, I can also relate to the candle story, as there was a makeshift memorial about 50 yards from my front door for the "former" gang member who was stabbed to death there last Halloween.
