Hello All,

I really wanted a Yugo M57, and was practically drooling over the Hard Chomed version offered by Classic arms.... but the perhaps likely idea that the 7.62x25 surplus ammo is dried up is keeping me from just getting one...

Though a large part of my attraction to the Tokarev is the 7.62x25 ammo, its hard to justify the cost difference in ammo compared to 9mm - based on $18 per box of S&B current production ammo.

I was initially looking into the EAA M88 - a 9mm Tokarev...but it has a shortened barrel...(main purpose of this pistol would be "range toy", not CCW)...then I ran into the Type 54 in a 9mm...Can anyone tell me about this model?

I read some posts about folks converting their 7.62x25 Type 54s into 9mm, by just changing the barrel and bushing, but having to push their 9mm ammo closer to the front of the magazine - I can assume if the Type 54 was made to be 9mm from the factory, this shouldn't be an issue?

Also read that the Type 54 in 9mm has worse trigger slap than the 7.62x25 variant?

I can assume the overall quality of a Chinese Tokarev to be a notch or two below a Yugoslavian version? What would be the usual deficiencies if so?

Someone is offering me a Type 54 in 9mm with 2 mags for $250 - would this be good deal?

Thanks in advance!,

Bob

where?
I'd suggest you point them to all the toks available for $150, and point out that Navy arms imported them in a matched (and SN'd) set consisting of two barrels, both the 9 and 7.62..

Work for 200, right now if your not holding surplus, Tok ammo can be hard to find.
Also, the 9mm had 3 types of mags, a spacer IN the mag, a spacer in the magwell (some have stated a modified frame like the M88) and just plain old x25 mags.

they all work
BUT finally, I got my M88 for just shy of 250, so... it's up to and it's a NICE gun for the money.
As for the chinese workmanship, most people will say not bad, not a FN presentation grade, but not bad.

Thanks for the heads up - Snagged a 9mm Norinco Tokarev for $162 after mailing and FFL fees. May get it's Chromed/Nickel brother as well :). Other than grips, theres no real difference between the Navy Arms, KSI or other distributors versions of the Chinese Tokarev?

On a side note, I see chrome/nickel/stainless versions of the guns from time to time - I'm assuming they are not stainless and probably Nickeled or Chromed - to anyone owning one - can you tell me of the quality of the plating? Hows it wearing? Think it might be hard chrome?

Thanks,

Bob

I've had a chicom type-54 I bought twenty years ago new for 75 dollars and it works perfectly. Nine mill ammo is common but 7.62x25 was scarce back then. If you got that gun for that price and it functions, then you got a pretty good deal. The fit and finish on my gun is good, lke a romey.

I have one, it's target-gun accurate and it's never jammed. It's probably the most accurate centerfire semi-auto I've ever had. It's a real easy gun to deal with, too, maintenance and assembly-wise.

I have two Norinco Toks (9MM and 7.62) and the quality & fit are great. Norinco also used harder steel than was used with the other Toks. I like 'em.

Think I've been bitten by the Norinco Tokarev bug....after getting the blue 9mm, a Chromed/Nickeled/Stainless one popped up....they are both 9mm though....will have to get the 7.62 barrel, bushing and mags sometime....or maybe just get another Norinco Tokarev in that caliber ;-)

Purchased my Norinco 213 Para in mid 90's NIB, 1 mag, cleaning tool and case for $110. Tough pistol, only downside is low cap mags. Had to do some searching for mags. Found some new $20 ea. so I bought 5.

Chrome/stainless look cool but in a S/D situation, sure don't need a pistol that reflects light! Especially for the right prices if you could get one
that take both barrels setup. What I'm not clear on is, to take both barrels would it have to be the model that shoots 7.62x25, to be able to accept different size mags?

I really want a high capacity semiauto quality pistol, looking at Glock 9mm's,
lots of inexpensive mags out there, add a couple extra 31 or 33 round magazines, puts at top of my list.
