Years ago, I helped my friend with his ongoing woodchuck culling project on his property. No big wide, open fields but mostly more of a small meadow scenario surrounded by woods. Shots were from real close to about 125 yards. We would hide in the woods at the edge of the field with shooting distance determined by what gun you were using. Based on my experience some guidelines were determined; out to 50 yards a 22 LR would suffice with headshots, and beyond that to about the 125 yard opportunity zone I used my .22 Hornet. I always thought a 22 magnum would have been nice down there but have never owned one. We decided that anything bigger than a 22 Hornet was not needed although some bigger centerfire varmint rounds have been used and were deemed as "overkill" and excessively noisy. Woodchucks are tough and head shots were the norm for quick, humane results.
