So my concealed carry permit is coming up for renewal in June. This is my first time doing it and so far all I've come up with is 18.2-308.010 as far as a reference.

What I would like to know is what paperwork I need to send in and if its the same $50 initial fee as the first. Also what forms, the same as initially like you're doing it for the first time?

FWIW I'm also living in a different county than when I originally applied. You're not legally required to change that here so I'm assuming I just send the correspondence to the county I originally applied in.

TIA, Jon

No, you go to the court in your new jurisdiction. And each county has a different fee. $50 is the Max. Some like Orange, Montgomery, city of Salem etc have much lower fees.

I’d suggest calling the clerk of the court and asking what your required to do. But you should be in the renew window.

I got my VA CHP in 2011. Had to drop off paperwork and payment at Fairfax County Courthouse. In 2016 it needed to be renewed. The County sent me a reminder and I completed, sent payment, and all good. In 2021 I got ZIP reminder and had to look it up and they said resubmit (by mail is okay with a certified check) as long as you do it at least 45 days out and no earlier than 90 days before it expires. I sent it in 27 days out. It expires on the 28th. I figured I'd rather send it in than ask for permission for being late, which they make it almost impossible to get a person on the phone anyhow. I suspect I'll get a letter a week after it expires with a letter saying it was too late to process and I'll need to apply all over again, take the CHP course (which will take time and money), and another 45 day wait. The first time I got my permit I got it on Day 44. Good luck.

@Hokie_PhD has it right. I got my original permit in Stafford County and renewed in Spotsylvania. It’s basically a new application, although it was a bit faster the second time (although I can’t swear whether that was the different County or faster because I already had one).

Definitely check with your County Clerk to see what they want. I honestly can’t remember if I just sent them a copy of my current permit or not. (It was 7+ years ago) but the Clerk can tell you exactly what you need.

I moved the last time I renewed. And each jurisdiction is a bit different. But I’m pretty sure they require a copy of the existing one. Again it’s best to always check.

And as someone who grew up in Fairfax, I’m so glad to be out of that vile place, it sickens me how they ruined a once amazing place to live. And when I left over a dozen years ago it was becoming very anti anything American especially 2A. So I can’t imagine what it’s like now. That said, I’m very glad to be in a very pro 2A county. But I fear with all the folks moving here they may be following me.

I’m actually surprised that Fairfax wasn’t one of the first places to pass new gun restrictions when preemption was removed. I’m also surprised there hasn’t been a move to change from being a “shall issue” State to something more restrictive.

I used to take pride in living in the Commonwealth because of its pro-2A position, especially compared to MD and DC. Now I’m glad I left when I did and happy to live in a state where my right to carry is defined by the Constitution.

Why wouldn't I just renew in the county that issued my permit since its not legally required to change that? Any legal docs you can site for reference?

Regardless, am I understanding it right that you have to fill out the same paperwork as initially? You ARE supposed to be able to do this by mail so I shouldn't have to go to a courthouse.

I'm going to call the courthouse where I originally filed tomorrow and see what they say.

Double check your renewal form and be sure you fully answered EVERY SINGLE QUESTION. If you have no tattoos SAY SO, do not leave that one blank. I had that problem when renewing in Fairfax County few years ago.
I cannot cite specific statute, but I would avoid hassle and go to the county clerk where you live, not here you used to live.

You’re not legally required to update the address on your permit, but you have to file in the County in which you live. Application Page 3, Notice 2.

Very pleasantly surprised to get my renewed CHP from Fairfax County 2 days before my current one expires... Per my first post, I only got it in 4 weeks before the current one expires, and given that the county said submit at least 45 days out. So, I have to acknowledge they did a very good job, exceeding my cynical expectations.

I'm in Chesapeake.
Went to the clerks office at the court house anbout a month early. Because of Covidius they had a window for renewal.
Gave them $50 and the old permit
They gave me a receipt and two weeks later the new one came in the mail.

Nothing cynical at all about those expectations when dealing with Fairfax County on gun-related issues!
