Civilians to guard police stations

Police stations currently being targeted by dissident republican terrorists will soon be guarded by unarmed civilians.

It is part of a drive to tackle the shortage of experienced police officers, releasing them from guard duties and putting them on the streets to tackle so-called ordinary crime.

This proposal will affect six or more police stations in the north and west, including Strand Road and Waterside in Londonderry, Coleraine, Limavady, Strabane and North Region`s largest base at Maydown just outside Londonderry.

In the coming months, the number of armed police officers on guard will be reduced and civilian workers without guns will be on duty, although they will have armed police officers nearby.

One senior Policing Board member says it is an essential move.

Policing Board Vice-Chairman Denis Bradley said: "We need to get as many police people out on the streets onto the roads to respond to whatever crime is happening so that people feel more confident more secure.

"Now that means a police man is guarding a police station who doesn`t need to guard it that means that person will be civilanised and a police man will be put on the streets."

Unionists, though, are outraged that unarmed civilians will soon be guarding police stations which are under deadly threat from terrorists.

DUP MP Gregory Campbell said: "The North West in the view of many people has been the hotbed of so-called dissident activity. So if there is anywhere where there is more vulnerability in terms of security bases it is the North West.

"We`ve seen five six maybe even seven either army camps or police stations that have been under attack by these republican elements.

"Now if those bases some of them are going to be made in the front line by personnel some of whom will be unarmed and civilians then that is a very deep serious security consideration."

Even though not in the US, were I a civilian there I would NEVER guard a POLICE STATION. That is THEIR JOB. They are sworn officers, authorized to use deadly force. Unless they gave me a million dollar life insurance policy, payable to my family (and free unlimited medical care in the event of an "on-the-job" injury), they could bite my "republican butt".

Flashbunny--here is large order of "I'm unarmed Hats" just waiting to be shipped.

Anyone recall the attack squirrels that plagued the citizens not long ago...with the thinking over there ,why not use "guard squirrels "
;)

So silly to even worrying about protecting a station. Just put a "Quarantine" sign up. If they want to get elaborate, a bit of foam sprayed over the muzzles of dogs who are chained outside. O.K., if they want peepul, then dress up the civilians as escaped looneys and let them wander outside aimlessly.

re 1973

LONDON (Reuters) - A squirrel is spreading terror in a Cheshire town where it keeps attacking people.

Its latest victim was a two-year-old girl, British newspapers reported on Thursday.

Children have been attacked, grown men chased and residents of Knutsford, central England, are fearful of letting their kids out to play, the Times newspaper said.

The rogue squirrel's latest attack was on toddler Kelsi Morley who was bitten on the forehead.

"It was awful because she (Kelsi) was spinning around and we couldn't get it off," her mother told the newspaper.

"From the amount of blood there was, I thought it had taken Kelsi's eye out."

The squirrel eventually let go and the terrified youngster was rushed to a doctor.

Colin Booty, a senior scientific officer in the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said it was very unusual for a squirrel to behave like this.

Local resident Blanche Kellye said the problem was not funny.

"Everyone round here is living in fear...it's a vicious little thing. I'll never trust squirrels again." :what:

If only someone had their trusty .22LR that squirrel would be a mid-afternoon snack. WAIT! We're talking about England where everybody is safer due to their being less guns!

He was deprived of nuts as a child. A victim of living in a crowded burrow with numerous siblings left unattended for long periods of time. His father had long since run away, leaving him in a fatherless society. He, being a gray squirrel , was a subject of constant ridicule and harassment by the red squirrels. Instead of gathering nuts like the other squirrels, his mother, along with the pidgeons panhandled for popcorn provided by the man in the overcoat. He never learned to gather nuts because of this.

Ohhh shameless people. Do not blame the squirrel!

Nuthole, England

This reminds me of the attack bunny in Monty Python's "...Holy Grail"

Didn't the G.I.Joes of WWII leave some grenades or BARs in the UK?

For free airfare and a "flat", I'd volunteer to "Rambo" this Axis of Evil squirrel into jelly. God Save the Queen.

Former PETA supporter

AZTOY

I'm just waiting for Drizzit to post the news story and pic of "attack squirrels" on guard with "I'm not armed hats"

Some high ranking Inspector will steal idea from THR and call it his own. They are just that wierd in thinking over there.

--- Suggestion for a uniform for the guards to wear ---

Anyone else get the feeling that entire country is turning into one giant Monty Python show?
