Does anybody know if the barrels on the PSA AR's that classicarms is selling have the hammer forged barrels?

It's a safe bet that those are NOT CHF barrels, since most companies advertise that feature like crazy when it is present.

It would cost $100 more if it did.

hammer forging aside, what are the thoughts on this rifle as a self-defense weapon?

PSA quality seems good on average but is not yet proven. I have personally had quality problems with AR products purchased from PSA. This rifle is probably a good choice in the $660 price range, but if you could spend a little more there are other rifles I would choose over it, such as a Spike's Tactical setup. For a little under $1000 you can get a colt 6920 which is identical in quality and materials to a military issue M4 and differs only in having a 16" barrel and being semiauto only.
