I have a Ruger Blackhawk in satin s/s. It's getting to look a little dingy and grey from powder residue and such.( Patena) What is the best way to remove the dirt that seems to have imbedded itself into the metal. I really don't want to use 0000 wool. Is there a solvent to remove this grunge.

I don't know if these are still available, but the one I have works well for me. Mine has lasted a long time too - it just takes a small piece to clean the front of a revolver's cylinder, as well as the frame just in front of the cylinder.
The instructions say to not use the "lead-away" cloth on blued guns because it will remove the bluing. I never have.

The only solvent I have found that will take it off of a cylinder face without using any abrasive action like polishes or wire brushes is Breakfree Bore Cleaner. Let it sit on the metal for 20 minutes or so. After that a nylon brush will take it off easily.

Barkeeper's Friend is another great cleaner for stainless steel things as is Flitz

Mothers mag wheel cleaner & polish. Available at Walmart. Just use a small ammount and wipe gently and it will maintain the satin finish. Rub too hard and too much the satin finish will become a bright polished finish

I've use Flitz, Mothers, or whatever metal polish is available. I've been doing this for years on stainless guns with no problems.

I often wonder if the stuff I use to clean my bear fermentor would work on a stainless gun? Sure cleans stainless, will remove burnt on carbon from a stainless steel pan. PBW.

All cleaners of that type are abrasive, it just depends on the type and grade used in the cleaner.
