With my sons upcoming arrival on Monday or Tuesday of my sons Savage Rascal I decided it was time to pull out some of my old targets and beautify them so they can get so use.

I also cleared a couple paths for them in our woods.
First target on the left is AR500 and at 25yds second target on the left path is also AR500 but at 50yds and the right path is a nice rack of knock down targets at 100yds.

This was some pretty thick stuff and I had to bust out the axe to take care of a few of the bigger trees

Only complaint I have is that it's 91°and I'm sweating like a stuck pig and I still have to now the yard now.

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't be comfortable without a dirt berm.

I know a guy around here that owned a few hundred acres so he felt safe shooting without a berm. One day he went out and started shooting and heard people screaming. A family was mushroom hunting on his land and he shot the wife.

Yes, they were trespassing, but he still didn't want to hurt anyone.

On my 300yd and 700yd rifle range there is berms. This will be strictly .22 shooting and there is signs of firing range and no hunting no trespassing sings on the property to alert people

Awesome looking range. Would love to have that much property to set up that kind of range.

I would not be comfortable with that. I would want a dirt backstop.

Very nice set up. :)

Yep, me too, especially when shooting steel with it's probable ricochets. Unless one has a natural backstop of a large hill or bluff directly behind the area.

In the second picture, behind the swinger target, I see lots of daylight and flat ground. Also appears to be a fence and may be the border of the property, I dunno.

I have two private ranges set up on my son's and my brothers properties. So I appreciate the advantage and convenience of having your own range. Both are set against steep bluffs with what I believe is a zero possibility of a round getting out. Both are out in the middle of no where and have nothing behind them for miles. Property lines from the targets on both are 80 acres acres away and on the other side of the bluffs. Still, whenever we shoot a thousand rounds in a weekend, I worry. Maybe it's just me.

The 50 and 25yd targets are angled down to keep the fragments downward and behind the knock downs is a property line and its the back side of our neighbors and they only come out there with a tractor since its a hayfield so I know when there is something there.
I do agree a backstop would be optimal but I'm going to change this range up because it's just temporary to teach my 6yr old and 4yr old to shoot

That tells me you are using the neighbors property as your backstop. I farmed for many a year, and I was out in the hayfields many times, when not in a tractor. Since the majority of that field is obscured by foliage, how do you know if someone is walking the fence line? Or checking for condition of the hay, checking for insects, or even an Agronomist doing a field check? Sorry, but while you are attempting to teach your children how to shoot, you are also teaching them to ignore obvious safety concerns. Angling targets down may help direct hits downward, but what happens when you miss and go into the neighbors property? Trees and foliage are not berms.

Glad the safety implications of not having berms was brought up.
This setup leaves too much reliance on chance and good luck.

He might have 10,000 acres of back yard back there.

Very nice setup though. I will be over on Saturday.

Read the posts and look at the pictures. The fenceline directly behind the last targets is the property line. If the OP has 10,000 acres it must be in the other direction. Such close proximity to an area one has no control over it's access and no protective berm to prevent bullets from entering that area is not a safe situation, nor is it responsible.....and in some states like mine, illegal.

if only shooting 22 's or anything for that matter and you are talking about bullets flying all over the place which they don't what would a dirt backstop do for that. easy to see why no ranges get built
