Alabama has some very thick cover that whitetails seem to disappear into. For this type of hunting(though I prefer stand hunting using one of my longer range rifles) A shorter, faster handling rifle fills the bill. Here are 3 of my favorites. A Chinese SKS with 17" barrel, modified front sight and 5 round magazine,a Western Field Model 842(Savage 340) in 30.30 win. with 19" barrel Bushnell 4x28 compact scope and a Chaing Kai Shek Chinese 1935 Mauser with new Latin contract 20" barrel in 7x57 Mauser with Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 scope. All are light weight, carry easily in brush and pack a significant whollop.
