So I'm going to jump in to the AR15 market here in about a month, and was wondering what the concensus of the CMMG Bargain bin rifle was?

I carried an M16 over in the sandbox, and want to get back in to shooting the platfrom again.

Also wondering suggestions on accurate iron sights/BUIS for varmint hunting would be. I probably won't scope it for quite awhile, as I still like using Irons, being young and all :p.

And the Drop in .22lr conversion. My ideal option would be a whole upper, but I can't justify dropping $500 on a .22lr upper, when the whole CMMG Bargain bin rifle is only $600 itself. ha. I understand that using bulk .22 ammo with the .223 barrel will need the crap cleaned out of it, but would the accuracy be that much worse than my Marlin 60? I'm trying to get my girlfriend in to shooting a bit, and the .22lr would be perfect for her to start, then move up. Not to mention the price is bulk .22lr is awesome.

EDIT: Also, I don't see a listing for the chamber on the bargain bin page. Are these safe to shoot with surplus 5.56?

I have 2 of the BB rifles from CMMG. Both have been flawless in several thousand rounds through each, although I much prefer the 20" w/fixed sock over the 16" M4gery. Just my own opinion, my daughter feels just the opposite.
As far as the 22lr conversion ,. I have no practical experience with those but have often wondered myself.

Also, I noticed that the Chrome lined barrel adds $150 dollars to the price over a Nitride barrel.

Now for a select fire service weapon I see the point, but for me I'm not sure if it's necessary. I've never worn a barrel out, and am not able to even shoot enough to come close to doing so. I clean my guns after every range trip, so that's nothing for me to worry about. I have heard that the nitride barrels are more accurate due to it being a more uniform process. Is there merit to this? It's probably pretty negligible, but as I said, I don't see myself wearing the barrel out. And if I do, just buy a new heavier barrel :p

I'm a big fan of the bargain bins guns, but you may also want to see if CDNN has any of their S&W M&Ps still. IIRC they were the same price as the bargain bin guns.

I have two chrome lined Cmmg BBs. They were hand picked for $25 extra and both were flawless. I have two 22lr conversion kits and here is the interesting part. Both kits are of stainless steel, but one only works and seats in my chrome lined Cmmgs (barrel dia is 1/32 smaller I think?) and the other kit works in my Del-ton but does not fully seat in the CMMGs. Never had a problem with the conversion kits and my wife actually over came her flinching with the AR by using the conversion Kits. Cmmgs are a tight fit and finish.

I have two of them and love them both. Both of mine came with CMMG lowers and the only flaw I could find was a small scratch on the lower receiver on one of them.

Chrome lined barrel is $50 add on Cmmg and at Del-ton. I think the Chrome lined is more about pitting of the barrel than wearing out. For those of us who clean or snake the barrel every time we shoot it is probably not a big deal but powder residue left is a barrel under certain atmospheric conditions can promote gun powder residue/acid and particulate matter pitting and eating on your barrel. Yea I know pretty vague but just passing on the info...?

Yeah $50 dollars, sorry I miss typed. And yes, I always clean my guns, even my shot gun when coming home from shooting. In the summer it is VERY humid here. And obviously my 1960's Marlin 60 isn't chrome lined, or anything else I own. Chances are I'll just go with the Nitride when the time comes to actually purchase. 50 dollars isn't much money, but it's better spent on ammo in my opinion :D

The standard CMMG bargain-bin rifle gets you a nitrided barrel, which has 99.999% the benefits of chrome and none of the drawbacks. That's right, it's a better coating. Now, the other thing $50 gets you is a 1:7 twist, which may be important if you want to shoot 75/77gr match type bullets.

The consensus on CMMG's bargain bin is good, but right now there are also other good options right around the same price. Be sure to get on CDNN's weekly email list as they have really good specials every couple of weeks, including new CMMG ARs and the already mentioned S&W M&P ARs.

Cdnn was sold out of the S&W $599 ARs almost 3 weeks ago; or so they told me...

Where is that on the site? the "Request Email SPecials" where it asks for your Home address and stuff, as well as email? I don't really want to receive any more crap in the mail than I already do.

Yes, that or placing an order with them (which obviously also gives them your home address). I suppose you could email them and ask to be put on the email list but not the mailing list.

I got mine earlier this year-- $648 delivered-- that includes $25 hand select-- mine is an 18", 1/7" hard chromed, government profile...I love mine, and after a couple thousand through it- -including a bunch of Tula steel and Silver Bear, Mine has had almost no issues aside from a crappy C Product mag...but less issues my A2 had in the Corps...I'll prob get another BB later this year...here is mine..

I was issued an M4 then a M16A4SDMR, so my only reliability problems were the dumb GI mags. They didn't like mountains in the winter, but neither did I o_O. I in fact still have about 6 Pmags I bought when I was still in the Army, so that won't be a problem :D

And you did address one question of mine I hadn't asked yet, steel cased ammo. Schweet. The 1/9 twist will only really handle the lighter bullets correct? Or can it deal with the mid weight stuff as well?

Still curious about the .22lr drop in bolt though! And what effect the .223 barrel has on accuracy with the .22

1/9 should be good for most stuff you will fire-- 55 and 62 grn..Some have said 1/7 doesn't work on light <50 stuff, but I have searched and most people say it will handle the 40-45 grains with no issue-- I got mine w/ 1/7 because I love the 62 Grain Silver Bear stuff, and also want to shoot up to (and more) the 77grains...I think accuracy at short range may be off -- I think some dedicated .22 uppers have like a 1/12 twist, but I may be wrong. It shouldnt harm your 1/9 though..

Well I have access to around 500 rounds of the green tip, penetrator, for DIRT cheap, and it's a 60-some odd grain bullet isn't it? I may as well just get the 1/7 twist. Most of the cheap plinking ammo is 55 grain anyway.

The CMMG BB rifles are good basic AR shooters for the $$$. I bought 3 of them 2yrs ago when they were on sale. Gave 2 away (1) to my brother and (1) dad as X-Mas gifts (wife kept the last one). They have blasted thru the 2 cases of Silver Bear 62JHP I gave them like it was candy and are currently working on their 3rd case of PMC Hot Shot...

YES the CMMG's have 5.56 spec chambers so mil or contract over run ammo is safe to shoot.

The one we kept - I've shot a buch of different ammo out of this rifle just to see what it can do.

Don't believe for a min that you have to have 1/7 twist to shoot over 62gr bullets. The little CMMG BB we kept will shoot 1.5MOA with the Prvi 75gr match ammo. It shoots the same with the Prvi 62gr and I have gotten it well under 1MOA with 60gr Serria JHPs over IMR 4064. It shoots just under 1 MOA with Federal XM193 and Winchester LE 64gr Power Points.

I personally don't see the advantage to the heavy bullet out of a short barrel (espc with the horrid ballistics after 250yrds) and since M193 fragments out to 300yrds in a 16" gun, as far as I'm concerned it's as good as anything for any type of work I'll encounter in the lower 48 - True that it's not as good against barriers but I'm NOT attacking any fortified positions (2004 was my last go around w/that) - Hey if other people think they will be.... different strokes for different folks. Personally if the folks I'm after take up behind some (real) cover I'll take the oportunity to break contact or call in back up with bigger weapons.

Back to the CMMG. It's a good deal if you want a slightly above entry level assembled AR. There are some other good deals out there if you know where to look and are willing to build an AR. For instance Bravo Company Mfg is running one heck of a sale.... You can build a Tier 1 AR for not that much more.

Good luck with whatever you buy.

for irons - I imagine anything that works for shooting will work for hunting. A good buy for the money is the Midwest Industries flip-up. I have one and it works great; solid lock-up, holds adjustments, etc.

The .22lr conversions work for what you'll want them for: plinking. Since the 1x7 or 1x9 twists aren't what .22s are used to, you'll get larger groups. I still hear they hold pie plate accuracy out to 50 yards, however. the only bad thing is that they require adjusting your sights due to the drastic differences in POI versus POA. To clean your gun, simply change back to the standard bolt, blast a couple .223/5.56 rounds down range, and that should get all the fouling out of the gas tube and port.

You can e-mail CMMG for the chamber specs, but they mostly use 5.56 on their standard rifles and uppers anyway, so I doubt they'll use anything else. There aren't a whole lot of .223 AR brands out there anymore unless you're buying one that isn't meant to be a your usual flavor of carbine.
