CNN POLL: Gun Control, we're losing bad.

Biased question.

If they asked "Do recent violent attacks prove more people need to be able to protect themselves?" it would be just as bias, only in our favor.

Let us see how it would sound with another question:

"Does the increase in vehicular accidents prove we need more restrictions on unsafe drivers?"

With such a question the deciding factor is intended to be emotion directed to a conclusion by the wording of the question.
It would not matter if you have the strictest road and driving restrictions in the world. The question implies that more restrictions would be doing something to reduce the problem.
It also says "unsafe drivers" much like they imply gun laws will only target violent psycopaths. When in reality it applies and restricts everyone.

That is with something everyone is familiar with, driving. Now make it a subject they may not know much about, like already very restrictive gun laws and they are even more likely to go along with what the question implies is the correct answer.

Down to 72%... I usually don't like the phrasing of any CNN polls. May it fall faster.

On the article about the AL shooting did you notice the phrase "he used assault rifles, semi automatic guns ... and "high capacity" rounds.

Wow. uh Professional journalism. "high capacity rounds". Maybe its some brand new center fire that contains multiple primers and bullets to shoot in series all from one case?

Do the recent shooting rampages highlight the need for more gun control?

More gun control in Germany? Have they looked at German gun laws?

Gun laws in Germany according to T stahl of this site in 2005:
http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-125727.html

Good summary. Takes about a year of belonging to a club and shooting thier guns to even be able to own muzzle loaders.
Airguns and BB guns of decent power are firearms.

Here is the EASIEST method out of a couple according to him:

d) You become a sports shooter. That's probably the easiest and most convenient way. You have to prove:
- A clean background, though I don't know how they do this in case of foreigners. But basically foreigners CAN get a license.
- Your practical and theoretical knowledge regarding guns and gun-laws. It used to be something like course taking two to four evenings with a multiple-choice test and a practical exam showing you can safely handle a gun, point out different calibers, etc.
- That you have been "regularly and successfully" practising for twelve months according to the rules of an approved shooting association.

An SOP could be:
- You find a club near you. There will be one, whereever you go, just have to look for them. There are more than 30 in greater Stuttgart e.g..
- Shoot as a guest. So you can see if the club fits your interests. Some clubs concentrate on different disciplines/types of guns/ranges.
- Become a member.
- Shoot about twice a month for a year.
- Apply for your license.

There are two licenses for sports shooters. The "sports-shooters license" ("yellow card") for multiple-shot muzzle loaders (mostly revolvers), non-semi-auto rifles, single-shot shotguns (including over-unders and SxS), single-shot pistols. The "green card" for any other gun: semi-auto pistols, revolvers, semi-auto rifles and shotguns, pump-action shotguns.
In both cases you have to prove your "need" for the guns. In case of the yellow card you only have to prove your need for the first entry in the card. In case of the green card you have to prove your need for every single gun.
The "green card" doesnt include the yellow one. You have to prove a need for every single gun that can be bought with a green card. For a yellow card you have to prove your need only for the first one, even if you want to buy a rifle that your association actually doesn't have a discipline for.
It could be possible that you try to get an entry in your green card for a gun that could also be bought with a yellow license, but why? An entry in your green card costs about as much as an application for a yellow card.

Reloading? Not as many as you might think, because:
- You have to take course on reloading (and black-powder handling if you want to buy black-powder for your muzzle loader).
- You need a license for buying powder that has to be renewed every few years.
- If you want to store more than, AFAIK, 1kg (2.2lb) of powder you need a separate, uninhabitated room with a pressure-relief opening (aka "window").

Those are the highlights, and I am sure things have not become easier since then.
He mentions a hunting license cost several thousand euros and classes, making it even more out of reach and more hassle than the above method.

Yeah gun tragedy in Germany really highlights the need for even more gun laws. (sarcasm) These people will never stop as long as aquiring a firearm is even a possibility.

This is a one-sided question in a non-scientific poll on the website of a left-leaning news organization. I am actually surprised that the "NO" count was as high as it was.

If question was "Do you believe the recent shootings shows the need for more concealed carry permits?" and it was posted on the FoxNews website, the results would be skewed the other direction.

News organizations do these things to give the their viewers the warm fuzzies. Its akin to preaching to the choir.

Read the disclaimer on the poll:

"This is not a scientific poll"

**************************

In 2002 Germany raised the legal age to have a firearm from 18 to 21 after 19 year old Robert Steinhaeuser shot and killed 13 fellow students and teachers.

I guess today's 17 year shooter didn't read the law.

Interesting I voted on two separate computers.. and both of them had it at 71-29 with 5819 yes and 2378 no.. something tells me that it's permanently skewed..

I slapped this poll up on TFL as well. Copied and pasted from PILMAN's OP, hope you don't mind.

Posted From TFL...
These are insecure polls... "X" out of the window and return to vote again... you know the liberals are doing so...
Brent

He's right, this poll doesn't track you via cookies, so you can vote indefinitely.

I just figured out the reason that I can't vote....

I'm starting to think that my vote would go through if it were "Yes."

Kinda explains the numbers...

In some of the articles about the tragedy, they used the word "sprayed" and mentioned a "30 round burst", as if it were an automatic rifle.

We hear of the tragedy in South Alabama, and the shooting in Germany ... then CNN does this poll while these shootings are on peoples' minds ... does anyone expect different results?

Not sayin I like it, but we're talking about the Clinton News Network here.

Who cares, it's CNN. Only the hardcore Obama bots and old hippies are on there.

I would humbly offer that CNN covers a much broader base than that. I'll wager, in fact, that more than a few fellow THR members get at least some of their news from CNN; I know that I do, and I don't consider myself to be either hardcore or old. If we are going to win the gun-rights PR battle that has raged across this country for years and years, we can't just abandon a large segment of the viewing, and voting, public.

Vote early and often!
