Why do we allow people who know nothing about a subject vote on laws affecting it? They should have the decency to do some research or recuse themselves.

Co-Sponsor Of Bill Banning Magazines Demonstrates She Doesn't Know What They Are, Mistakes Them for Bullets
By Stephen Gutowski

Congresswoman Diana DeGette (D-CO) who, along with Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, reintroduced the house bill to ban magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds of ammunition was involved in a Denver Post public forum on gun control yesterday.

During the forum, she was asked about the efficacy of banning these kinds of magazines when there are tens of millions of them in circulation. Rep DeGette's response revealed a complete ignorance of the item which she is seeking to ban.

"What's the efficacy of banning these magazine clips? I will tell you, these are ammunition, they're bullets, so the people who have those now, they're going to shoot them" says Rep DeGette. According to her, "the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will be shot and there won't be any more available.....rest of the story at the link

Unfortunately this story is not unbelievable, but typical :banghead:.

I'm still wondering why we allow people to write laws who know nothing about the subject of writing laws in the first place, much less the subject about which they are writing the laws about.

I guess if the people writing the laws don't know how to write laws, it's OK to vote on laws about subjects they don't know anything about.

How did someone not immediately, politely, stop her and say, "I'm sorry, could you please clarify your statement? You appear to have a fundamental misunderstanding of the subject."

So what this means is that her TRUE original intent was to ban ammunition in order to deplete the supply in the long run? Well, we wanted transparency in government, that's pretty clear! :barf:

Well I feel like a complete idiot now.
All this time, I never knew they were called magazine "clips."
And, I had no idea they were a single use item.
I had no idea they were supposed to magically disappear after emptying them.
Mine must be defective.
Is that dangerous????
I guess I'm just a cheap b*stard, because I reuse mine a lot.

:scrutiny:

On TV, they are dropped and never picked up. That means they will eventually rust out. Or the police will "take them off the streets".

Or something like that.

Exactly. Did she think she was banning ammunition all together? And still voted for it?

In all probability she probably thinks magazines are disposable.

We have been blessed with these folks both on fed and local level:what:

This is also what we have had to fight on a local level too.

*sigh*

It seems that she is not the only one that is confused...

This is from the Denver Post describing how Ms. DeGette is 'confused':

"What she didn’t appear to understand is that a magazine can be reloaded with more bullets. According to the Shooter’s Log, only early on were magazines for AR-15s designed to be disposable, but the military changed that and now magazines are used several times. In handguns, a magazine is designed to be reused hundreds of times."

The link also has a link at the bottom to the entire hour and a half video...

not sure what is worse. Not knowing what a magazine is or her thinking she is banning bullets!

I am lost for words. I don't even understand how she could come to that conclusion. How is it possible for someone surrounded by advisers and people coaching them how to speak, still be able to make such a stupid comment? Don't answer that. Biden does it daily and seemingly on purpose.

Perhaps she's referring to magazine clips that hold the imploding bullets.

From a different source:

http://blogs.denverpost.com/thespot...ppears-to-not-understand-how-they-work/93506/

“The Congresswoman has been working on a high-capacity assault magazine ban for years, and has been deeply involved in the issue; she simply misspoke in referring to ‘magazines’ when she should have referred to ‘clips,’ which cannot be reused because they don’t have a feeding mechanism,” Johnson said.

Isn't it great when the explanation has glaring errors?

Just more proof to Ron Whites statement "YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID"

But no one says we have to keep electing it. I don't understand why in this day and age of so called "dirty politics" an opponent of these kinds of legislators can't just call them out on it. Imagine the TV spot showing this clip and pointing out just how stupid she is, and then asking if we can afford to keep such an idiot in office.

For some reason we don't do that.....

From their effort to save face:

**double facepalm**

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Sounds a lot like the congress critter that was afraid the military was going to capsize some island by moving too much stuff there.

ya ... really

I'm impressed by this statement.

I've been saying for years that the problem isn't politicians. It's the citizens that are the problem.
