Coke Bottle Silencer - Does it Actually Work?

Before anyone jumps down my throat, let me assure you all that I'm well aware of NFA laws regarding suppressors, and I have no interest whatsoever in building such a silly thing, or the jailtime I'd have waiting for me should I do so.

I ask, because I'm currently watching a new episode of The First 48, and the detectives are investigating a crime scene in which a retired police captain was shot. At the scene, was a juice bottle w/ powder burns & residue on the inside, and electrical tape around the mouth of the bottle.

Now, I can't imagine such a crude device actually doing much good to muffle a shot, especially if it wasn't stuffed with anything. I also can't believe it would survive in a usable form past the first shot.

What say you fine folks? I know many of you have a wealth of experience in all things quiet - has anyone ever put up the cash to build such a contraption? Have any studies been done by LEO organizations?

I've seen books on how to build them, and heard of such things on shows like CSI, but now that one has appeared in a real-life crime show, I'm dying to know if they're really total junk (as I'd assume they are) or if there's something to it.

I'll just say that there is something to it.

ETA: Don't try it without paying the tax, etc. There are videos on youtube of people showing the effectiveness of such devices.

Agreed. There sure is something to it, and would indeed survive the first few shots, though subsequently get louder. Ideally, one would use a subsonic .22lr handgun/rifle or similar.

Steven Segal used that in the Seige, on a 45. He is by the way an avid shooter and a very good shot. He uses 1911's, with Caspian slides. And to answer your question, I have it on some good authority from some Viet Nam era marines, that it would work on a round or two. but i wouldn't try it as aside from the legal isues, bullets do strange things when deflected from their given path.

It is my understanding that a plastic bottle with a rag stuffed in it works quite well for the entire ten rounds of the 10/22 magazine out of a Ruger Charger and the only noise is the sound of the action. It's a shame to have to get a tax stamp for a plastic bottle though.

You actually would pay the tax on the adapter, as the bottles are considered a "disposable wipe" (or something to that effect).

Years ago, these adapters were sold for use with 2ℓ pop bottles.

It's an adapter that allows you to screw an oil filter to a 1/2 x 28 barrel. (Much like naolith alludes to above.)

Cadiz Gun Works is a Licensed manufacturer of Type II weapons, and they are the Warranty Gunsmiths for Arsenal's Saiga-12's.

I have one on order, and am waiting for the Form 3 to be processed. My local Class III will have it as a demo can for the monthly carbine training shoot they put on. I will then, after a few months or so, go ahead and transfer it on a form 4 to my personal collection.

ive heard of that before tried it and it worked to some extent with just a coke bottle sounded like someone smacking it realy loud never put a rag in it tho.....ive also heard of tapeing a potatoe to the end of a .22 but never tryed it
