Colorado leftover licenses

Why doesn't the state let the residents have the licenses they put in for? Then there won't be so many leftovers to deal with! I personally know of 3 hunters who've put in for certain areas for over 5 years, they get preference points, but no license. Wonder how tasty those preference points are come Dec. ? Why give out the points, the license is what the hunters are after! Such a sad state of mind this game commission has!

Are you asking why a state, that has to have a website dedicated to teaching you how to fill out an application for a hunting license, does something? Colorado has the most convoluted hunting regulations/seasons/areas I have ever seen.

Sounds like you're the stumped one. Did you seriously ask why couldn't have the licenses you apply for even though that would likely exceed the quota?

No, I'm not stumped at all ! How can they exceed the quota if they have all of the extra licenses ? I was born and raised here, I know how the G&F work their system and the BS with the out of staters. I went to school with 2 guys who's dads' were wardens back in the mid 60's, Leslie was one of them, got a lot of insider info on how things were/are run. No need to try to BS a BS'er!

So are you saying you should get a license that you didn't apply for? Like new mexico's 4th choice option?

I think what he is asking is; why are there left overs if people who apply for that area don't draw one?

If there is a 200 animal quota, 250 people apply, 100 don't draw a tag, and they offer 50 leftovers; are they doing this so people who were too lazy to apply still have a chance to camp out at Big R until they open?

NO if they have a unit with 200 tags and only 100 people put in for those tags there will be 100 tags left over and the 100 who put in will get their tags. That is how it works.

Left over tags are from units where they didn't have as many applicants as there were tags available. There really isn't a vast conspiracy going on here.

Now if you are having a hard time filling out a Colorado hunting license application I don't what to tell you. It's about as simple as counting to three as in 1 2 3. You get on line you fill out all the blanks and you hit submit.

I've been doing it for a lot of years and have never had the first issue or difficulty doing so except for the occasional dyslexia that I get when filling out hunt codes.

I'm not trying to be a pill here I'm simply not getting where the hostility and the confusion is coming from, this is super simple stuff.

If you put in for a unit and didn't get the tag then they have leftovers one of two things happened. One a glitch or an administrative error occurred, two (and this is most likely) you messed something up on your application like transposing a number in your hunt code or some such. I've pulled that one more than once in fact I did this year on my Antelope unit...

Trying to buy out of state licenses is always a challenge. Too many states have tied the future of their Fish & Game efforts to license fees and consequently keep increasing the price. I for one cannot afford the extravagant fees, especially since they usually provide no additional service or help in actually filling the tag. Kansas, where I live, has raisde the price to ridiculous levels, which has discouraged friends of mine from hunting here. So, they end up with left over tags. They should move in the direction of some European countries where you get a refund of about 2/3s of your tag fee if you don't fill it. That creates an incentive for guides who get some of the money if they are successful in helping you fill the tag. What a novel idea!!
