First of all, I'd like to thank everybody for all the info in this forum, because, this might be my first post, but I have been enjoying your gun wisdom for a while.

Second, I'm mexican, so english is not my native lenguage, but I'll happily accept any correction that helps me improve my writing skills.

Third, Altough I DO love my country, the gun legislation is truly and utterly rubibsh. So I'm not able to have anything bigger than .38 (9mm luger is banned because is designated as a "military cartridge"). The ammo is very expensive, and the guns very hard to get.

Despite all of this, I decided to get my permission and buy a gun. Given the caliber limitation, the obvious choice was a Glock 25, I try it, and I like it, and I'm aware of the reliability and easy of use of Gaston's creations.

But then I saw a dirty 1911, and I felt in love. The glock is still in my plans, but this gun stole my heart.

I bought it for something like $300 USD, and then spent another hundred bucks with a gunsmith. He told me that the gun was virtually unfired, but it wasn't taken care of, so I told him to blued it and chrome some bits, and of course, check everything inside.

So I finally have it, the pics are terrible, and I promise I'll post better ones.

But before, some questions.

1. Am I crazy for choosing an old 1911 over a brand new glock?
2. How does the 38 super compares, in terms of power and accuracy, against other calibers.
3. How much do you know about this model ( Colt Goverment series 70 MK IV)

You did very good on your purchase! New production Colt's in 38 Super start at $700 here in the US. The Super cartridge is very versatile. It can mimic loadings from 9mm to 357 SIG. There are some loads out there very close to the 357 Magnum! And no, you're not crazy for choosing the 1911 over a Glock. I myself prefer the 1911's over any other design out there. You will see a lot of internet jibes thrown between Glock and 1911 users. We love to pick on each other. In the end, it boils down to what fits you best. You can't go wrong with a 1911. Perfect for target shooting, self defense and can even be pressed into service for hunting. Enjoy it!

Hola, and congratulations on your Colt "Super Triente y Ocho!" Although the .38 Super cartridge has been seriously downloaded since its introduction,
powerwise, it's still a few notches above the standard 9mm, and the equal to any but the hottest +p+ 9mm ammo. If yours is an older Colt that headspaced the cartridge on the rim, you'll probably notice that accuracy beyond about 15 yards isn't exactly sterling, but...as an old mountain man told me once..."It'll do to ride the river with."

A good, fitted aftermarket barrel that headspaces on the case mouth will bring the accuracy of the gun into the arena with any of'em.:cool:

Next, you did very well in obtaining a very viable firearm that will give you good service and enjoyment.

Last, other than a couple of typo's, your "English and writing" is as good or better than many Americans.

I've read a little on mexican gun laws. Can one get a mini-14? I've read that firearm ownership is written into the mexican constitution.

Generally, citizens are restricted by law to:

* pistolas (handguns) of .380 Auto or .38 Special revolvers or smaller in either case,
* escopetas (shotguns) of 12 gauge or smaller, with barrels longer than 25 inches, and
* rifles (rifles) bolt action and semi-auto.

Yes, mexican law's are very stupid, specially when you take into consideration that you can easily buy from AK's to customized 1911's in the black market. So any bloke can buy a muffled 9mm or else.

This means that the average citizen is totally indefense against criminals.

Anyway, I live in a small city (about 1 million people) where there are like 5 murders a year and with a very good police department.

The real rip-off are the cartridges. A box of 50 winchester 38 super +P costs like 80 dollars... 9mm is about 50, but as I said before that is an ilegal cartridge.

By the way, do you know a page where I can find info and history of this model of colt?

I am not familiar with Mexican laws, but is it possible to reload there?

I have two .38 Supers and it is my favorite cartridge.
