I purchased a nib. 45 COLT not used. I want to load for it but want to re-place this part before I shoot. Any help would be appreciated. I see a lot of older info but I haven't found any updated? Ed Brown/mid-way/ brownels/ or file on it? Not big on altercations. Thank
you John.

The Series 70 barrel has a section at the muzzle that is larger than the rest of the barrel. Be sure you measure the diameter of this section when ordering the EGW bushing. The reduced diameter behind this section gives the barrel a little "wiggle room" during recoil yet still locks up tight. I have been running a solid match bushing on my Series 70 Gold Cup for 30 years with no problems.

Want to say thank u all. question. Do i need to run x amount of rounds threw it first so the barrel opens up as I was told? I don't want to break a pedal. And how will a rubber recoil washer/absorber help out if I first shoot it.

Just shoot it. If it breaks, then worry about replacing it.
Here is the story 1k. . I paid 900$ for it no more no less nib. I have a friend up North were I'm from originally but not no more after 20+. he claims it can be sold up that way for 1400 to1600 original. So he said flip it. He's military /teaches gun classes and has bank. The twist is he was probably dinking a bottle of scotch that he bid on himself and broke the seal as I will do on my vintage. Strange twist but he will not talk to me anymore if I put a round threw it. I will be using it w/ a lil. help from my friends!

Your friend - and a lot of Internet Experts - are real free with your money.
"Don't shoot it, it will lose value." and especially "Don't modify it, it will lose value." "Put it up and get something cheap to shoot."

A friend had the Perfect Squelch. He was shooting a rifle considerably older than he was and a bystander said: "Don't you know that is a Collector's Item?" He said "Yes, I know. What you don't know is, it already has been collected."

I got a Wilson's that was purposely undersized. It took me about two hours of sanding on it with very fine grit paper to get it to fit. No filing, no grinding, just some simple elbow grease. I used some blueing paste once it was all fitted and working. A nice tight b bushing is one of the easiest DIY upgrades you can do.

The other one, while we are on DIY upgrades where you can easily fit the part, is to try a squared off firing pin stop. Same thing, got one from Wilsons, they come slightly oversized. Took about two hours of just sanding with fine paper and oil. That squared off bottom dramatically reduces the slam of the slide. I made an Officers absolutely manageable using one.

$900 is an ok price for a late model(90's manufacture) Series 70. Depends on what came with it. Mind you, current MSRP is only $979 for an SS pistol. $899 for blued. Older pistols run more money on the auction sites for some reason.
"...want to re-place this part before I shoot..." Why? Rule Number One applies. If it works don't fix it.
You'll see a lot of posts about how collet bushings break easily. They're nonsense. Been using the factory collet bushing that came in mine for 40 years with no fuss.
"...Series 70 barrel has a section at the muzzle that is..." Only if you had that done. Didn't come that way from Colt. However, it's 5 thou bigger than the rest of the barrel. Any machinist can remove 5 thou from a half inch aft of the muzzle to the chamber.

Its a 1978 model. it has a fluted like barrel. ive heard about people busting a pedal off. HICKOCK45 was talking about it when he got one and replaced it wright away don't know if his was previously fired ?

Well.... I've got a box of busted collet bushings from back in the day.... 5 or 6 of 'em. Not mine. Some I took off other folks guns after they broke. Some were easy to remove/replace. Some made a bloody mess of the gun. Actually S70 Colt barrels ARE about .005" larger for about a half inch at the muzzle end. That is specific to the advent of the collet bushing and was designed to expand the collet fingers as the barrel goes into battery for a snug lockup at the muzzle.

A fluted barrel? Not from the factory. The collet bushing has 4 "fingers" that are springy to expand over that enlarged muzzle and tighten the barrel to slide fit on that end.

I would replace the original bushing and set it aside, get a solid one to put in the gun. Someday down the road if you decide to sell the gun you can include the original bushing complete with all its legs and maybe, just maybe it might bring a slight premium from someone who is interested in such things. It may not break but if it should it may do some damage (or may not). Anyway, they don't make them like that anymore.

Mr.Bill do you know which one from EGW I can order for it. I would like to take some guess work out of it. It is like you said taper/taperd ? Edit/talked w/Mr. George and orderd a few components. lighter spring/spare spring cap, b. bushing he put me on and i mentioned who referred me and cite name. Thank you! John

Best to measure the barrel diameter (at the muzzle) and slide diameter where the bushing seats, then call EGW with those measurements. Tell them which gun (brand, model, vintage) and that you want a no gunsmithing, drop in fit for the best results without fitting on your part. They have a tremendous knowledge base there and can provide you with a bushing that will get as much of the accuracy benefit as possible in a no fit configuration. They do this all the time for folks. Besides the measurements you only need to tell them what material (blue steel or stainless), where to ship, and your credit card info. Easy, peasy. Note that they manufacture the bushings in several standard ODs and don't massage that dimension for you, only the bore for the barrel. If your gun is a Colt the slide is most likely a .699" with a slight possibility of being a little bigger at .700" or .701". I've only encountered one Colt larger than that in all of the years I've been working on them. At any rate, your measurements are the key to them getting it cut for you. Remember to emphasize that you want a no gunsmithing, drop in fit.
My semi educated guess is that you will need the Carry Bevel Bushings Carbon Steel .699" Angle Bore ( http://www.egwguns.com/1911-parts/carry-bevel-bushings-carbon-steel-.699-angle-bore/ )cut to your barrel dimension with a slight possibility of needing the Carry Bevel Bushings Carbon Steel .701" Angle Bore ( http://www.egwguns.com/1911-parts/carry-bevel-bushings-carbon-steel-.701-angle-bore/ )if the slide runs a bit large. I'm guessing that your barrel will be about .581" at the muzzle. That is from many years of measuring 1911 parts.

Let us know what measurements you get. The same bushings are also available in stainless if you prefer. A little bit if shiny stuff with no need to apply a finish.

Thank you MR.Bill have one on the way. Just shot 2 more clips @ 7ysd. just to break in some. Figuring out the vertical/horizontal/ grouped (sights) and put 7 in a p.plate @ an inch. Need to get the b.bushing out and replace. Thank U. sir John. 28 rnds. in to it. Always wanted a COLT!

Let me ask this as I work through bullet profiles and hit a small hump with using the colt magazine. Were can I order a couple spare clips? It was w/ an XTP 185 g w/p.pistol I didn't want to get to short but as im on the olgive its time to stop and see if it may be a magazine issue or a steady diet of 230 rn? I know I need more magazines for one. Racked them through my mod. 654 no prob. and the do very well in that gun.

I don't know if I understand your problem, but I've always had good luck with Wilson magazines, usually available from Brownells. MegGar are also good, as are Chip McCormick. All these of course are for Colt .45 ACP and will work well in your handgun.

Received barrel bushing from EGW, and they new what was needed. Wolf spring kit just got in today from midway. @ 800 fps through chrono w/ the lightest spring 11# at steel plate 20 yds. it ejected them right and straight back and cases looked nice no denting as I was previously getting also. Thank you fellas and EGW!
