Colt AR15 Large Pin Trigger

Where can I find a competition trigger for a Colt AR15, large pin (.172) with block over safety?

Single stage or 2 stage? How light do you need to go?

Something between 4 and 2 lbs with a clean crisp pull and is reliable/safe to carry. Will mainly be used for self-defense, target and hunting. Any suggestions?

You can get 3-4lbs by just changing springs, but creep is another matter.

For the ultimate in triggers you can do some research on the McCormick, Jard, and JP trigger sets. For 2 stage designs you have the Jewell and RRA National Match worked over by John Holliger at White Oak Precision. Any of these will set you back $100-200.

For self defense you want something tested in HARD competition and that usually falls into a good stock trigger assembly, a McCormick or a JP.

I have a JARD in a large pin sear block Colt. The sear block had to come out. No problem for my gunsmith with milling machine and I have seen it done with a Dremel. It took a lot more work to install than the directions implied, the adjusting screw holes were distorted, the metal too hard to retap, so he had to do some screw mods to make it work. I am sure glad I took it to a pro's shop instead of trying to DIY. I was rewarded with a 2.25lb trigger pull nearly as crisp as a bolt action. But this is only a target rifle.
For home defense (Where do you live that a rifle is suitable for home defense?) I would want a polished up stock trigger or a hard tested 3-gun installation.

Thanks, the last time I checked those companies didn’t offer the large pin. I wonder if you have to remove the block for all these triggers- guess I’ll give them a call or stop by the local gunsmiths.

Who said anything about home defense? Anything beyond 50 yards I prefer a rifle over a handgun or shotgun.

This odd size pin and sear block action have pretty well turned me off of Colt ARs. I guess they had to suck up to the goverment to keep some military and police sales, and show they didn't trust us with a gun too much like military issue.

I figure if you are going to be engaged in a gunfight beyond 50 yards you better be shooting the rifle the army or SWAT issues you. Or be in a very rural setting. I'd want a heavier trigger pull than on a hunting or target rifle to be safe with the adrenaline moving.

My trigger pull is something like 10 to 12lbs and crappy has heck. As for "adrenaline moving" if your fingers on the trigger its time to pull it, otherwise keep it off. My biggest concern would be accidental discharge from dropping or bumping the weapon.

Just a thought for rural settings, a few years back a local numbnut flipped out and started shooting what he thought was NVC. He peppered his cornfield and neighbor’s houses with his 7.62 x 39 for about thirty minutes until the local LEO arrived.

Unfortunately the LEO’s made the mistake of pulling in driveway, at which time they exchanged gunfire and both suspect and LEO received nonfatal wounds.

Let me point out this person is not a veteran, but a fruitcake who had a long history of mental illness and drug abuse.

I’m sure most rural LEO’s would agree they feel safer carrying some type of patrol rifle in their vehicles when working areas known to have a high percentage of hi-power rifles.
As for the private sector we all know bad things can and do happen so it’s not unrealistic to believe that one-day we could be forced into a “long range - 50 plus” confrontation.
