Colt Government Carbine

Where can you find a Colt upper 16" chrome lined, heavy barrel with bayonet lug, 1:7 twist with a non detachable carry handle for a Colt carbine, as the regular Colt government carbines come with a non heavy barrel?
Also,
what is the difference between the Colt r6520 and r6920?

I only know of one place with a website that is an authorized Colt AR15 parts dealer and for the life of me I can't remember the URL. All I remember for a fact is that the parts are expensive. Expensive for ARs that is. You're pretty much paying for the Colt name. I was looking to get a 4-pos collapsible stock for my Colt Sporter Lightweight (which incidentally, is the same exact upper you described, with a lightweight barrel), but the actual Colt branded one was priced at $180. I ended up getting a Rock River Arms stock for $50.

I have a 20"bbl Colt HBAR with a 1:7 twist. I bought it at my gun shop. Next time in Ill ask and check to see where they ordered it from and if they have any 16" ones. But def check AR15.com

I have a 6520. It's an A2 upper with a lightweight barrel and an M4 stock.

The 6920 is a flattop (sometimes called A3) with an M4 barrel, and M4 stock. It also has a detachable carry handle. This rifle is the closest thing you can get to the real-deal military M4.


Either will be a great rifle. Personally, the lightweight is better. Does everything the M4's and HBARs do, but feels like nothing in your hands.

Are you dead set on the heavy barrel? The 16" HBAR weighs as much (or even a little more) than a 20" government-profile barrel. IMO the lightweight and M4 versions balance alot more naturally than the HBAR's, at no penalty to accuracy or controllability. 16" Colt HBARs are scarce you have to have one - sometimes I see them on gunbroker.com (do a search for "colt upper"). I would definitely recommend Colt over Bushmaster, RRA, etc, for rather extensive reasons that I won't bore others with.

Is a 6721 an A2 upper with fixed carry handle and 16" heavy barrel or an A3 upper with detachable carry handle and 16" heavy barrel?

Yeah I like the Colt HBAR but may be not be able to do that as they do seem to be difficult to locate, I wonder why the government carbines have the regular barrel if the HBAR is considered more accurate.

I could get a Colt M4 which has the HBAR, but do not like the detachable carry handle as I dont have any use for it and wouldnt want it to come off unless someone could convince me otherwise.

Also, on the Colt M4 with the HBAR I noticed that the barrel is heavy over half way down and then after the front sight assembly there is a small indentation that wraps around the barrel say an inch wide and then resumes being a heavy barrel again, what exactly is that for and is that the way that the Colt HBAR 16" barrels come?

I wouldn't labor too long under the (mis)apprehention that the HBAR is more accurate. I've never found that to be the case. HBAR's heat up more slowly, but they also take longer to cool down. They aren't massaged for greater accuracy or anything, so you're really not likely to see any accuracy difference between HBAR and non-HBAR barrels that couldn't be explained by other factors. The Government uses the lighter barrels because they're better for military use - commercial barrels usually have an HBAR because they're easier to make and have fewer manufacturing steps.

Don't worry about the detachable carrying handle coming off - it won't, unless you use a crowbar. And you will appreciate the ability to mount optics closer to the receiver when it comes time to do so. I prefer the looks and the simplicity of an A1 upper myself, but you just can't beat the A3/A4 configuration for adaptability and sighting options. That indentation in the M4 barrel is for the attachment of a grenade launcher - it looks "cool" but is of no use whatsoever.
