Recently i overheard the following question...

"Whats better the "Colt" or the "AK"?"

HAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA

these were people who get their knowledge from video games

asked from one "expert" to another "expert"

I am going to have to go with the AK.I think the round is better and it will function under much worse conditions then the colt.the colt is more accurate but for what the guns where designed for it is doughtfull if it makes any difference. If you want a sniper rifle buy a 308.

Give me an AK any time of the day. I dont have a colt but I do have a bushmaster. The AK is much more reliable and the ammo is cheaper. Nothing against the AR's, but as a combat rifle, the AK's rule.

beemerb, you plannin' on rollin' in the mud in a combat situation, anytime soon? Will that aspect of "better" really be helpful to you?

Seems to me that since hardly any of us here will ever be in that situation (or be there again), we might just think about stuff like "versatility" in the judgement. All-around usefulness might just include target shooting or varmint hunting.

Regardless, anybody oughta buy what makes'em happy...

Both are equally flawed, but in different ways. The AK fires a round that is really a bit too powerful for controlled automatic fire. It's design invites muzzle rise with the off-bore-axis recoil and massive moving parts. You can control it if you are experienced, but it's effectiveness is only realized in large infantry charges. When maintained or when not maintained, it is nearly 100% reliable and will go 'bang' when you pull the trigger.

The M-16 (which few would call a "Colt") is also flawed in that it requires constant maintenance to function 100%. While there are rabid defenders of the gun who will say it's always 100% and will cite anecdotes, I know that none of them would say it's more reliable than the AK-47. The saving virtues of the Stoner / Armalite design are ergonomics, accuracy, and contolability in full-auto fire.

If given the choice between the two, I'd ditch them both and carry a bolt-action rifle. I'd just make sure I had somebody to watch my back and they'd probably be carrying M-16's.

Given the choice of one and only one rifle, it would be the AR series. They are just too versatile and you aren't stuck with one caliber. You can have just about any caliber chambered for it that will fit into the magazine well. That's about the only limitations. I don't count the .50 cal conversion top half a conversion.

Now if I had a crazy situation...such as the "Red Dawn" type cropped up and I had to give out weapons to poorly trained folks, then AKs would be the choice.

Good Shooting

Why bother with the deficiencies of either system? Get a Daewoo, the best of both worlds. :)

Second the Daewoo option...

But in lieu of that, get at least one of each, the AK and the AR. I did...:D

Art;
I fall down a lot.Now we don't have a lot of mud puddles in AZ but it does happen.
Do you know what is going to happen in the future????Sorry i don't.

Colt bought the design and production rights from Armalite decades ago. They have made a few minor improvements over the years, but othewise it's still an Armalite product. COLT designed a version of the M-16 which had a nearly identical operating rod and gas system to that of the AK-47. The Model 703 did not go into production.

"even Colt realized they had a flawed product in the AR-15"

That's the one for me. I just like the AR15, I mean, I really like the AR15. I own a number of them and they are the most fun guns I own. I shoot them more than anything else. I don't nessessarily buy into the whole "flawed" thing, but either way it doesn't matter to me. As Art said, I am a civilian. I am not rolling around in the mud with my rifles. I will never use one of them in combat. They are sporting rifles for me and for me, they are the perfect sporting rifle. I have owned a semi auto AK clone. It was OK. It might be just the ticket if I was in a third war country hunting people. But I am not. The poor sights, the mediocre accuracy, and the caliber itself don't pull my chain. There are people who have something negative to say about everything. And our society loves to be negative. The US military IMO is far superior to any other. We are THE superpower in the world. And we have been using the M16 rifle for 30 years. Go with a winner.

As far as the 703, I might buy one. What caliber was it in ? When it comes to guns, I might buy anything. It is interesting.

It all depends how much money you have to spend and what you are going to use it for. By the way there are some really expensive ak's out there like the Valmet series or Galili.

But we are probably talking more down to earth prices.

The Ak is a good reliable close range blaster for the average joe that is not a rifleman and does not compete in precision matches.

On the other Hand the Colt target model with Stainless barrel is perhaps the most accurate semi-auto rifle on earth. With 1/4 inch groups brand new right out of the box being the norm with of course match grade ammo. Sure you can pay double the price for some custom built AR-15's that in my experiece shoot no better whatsoever and have a lot of extra bells and whistles that you will never need or use.

Basically all I did to my Colt was put an adjustable stock on it , a Jewel trigger set at 6 ounces, and a high quality Leupold scope.

My first Colt went 9,000 rounds and when I sold it, it was still shooting 1/4 inch groups consistantly at 100 yards with various weight match bullets like the 52, 53, and 60 grain Sierra's behind Hogdens BLC 2 powder.

Now few AK's, even the Gallil will even come close to this kind of accuracy.

WE all like to think of ourselves in the typical Walter Mitty daydream fantasy of an end of the world senario that pits us alone against the entire Chinese and Russian armies but reality is a little different. I like percision rifles like the Colt because you can do so much with them. I own AK's too but since I am not headed for the Persion Gulf at the moment I will have more satisfaction when shooting my precision Colt than I do when I blast away with my various AK's and Sks guns.

By the way the Colt has become so popular and scarce that when I bought my second one I had to wait a year and pull some strings and cut some deals just to get it that would have made old John D Rockafeller look like a beginner.

You guys have been had. "Anti-Gun Activist" is a troll. Who else says "Colt" instead of AR-15 or M-16? He probably only has heard Colt and AK in the movies. Check out his new thread over in the accessories forum. I strongly suspect this is a guy who used to call himself "chris mulka" and then "corld" over at the 1911 forum. No prrof of it, but the subject matter and manner of speaking are strikingly similar. It'll get worse, too, mark my words.

before we get out of hand here....

Anti-Gun Activist's post says pretty clearly that the point of his post was to laugh at videogamer types who never handled a real rifle before, hence "Colt" vs. "AK" I don't think the AR/AK debate was even what he meant to talk about.

So --

The AR/AK thing... well.. have fun. play nice.
I'll be over at the porch listening to Art's wisdom on that one. :)

The whole troll thing... I don't see trolling here. Just a real gun person laughing at poser gun people. Which I guess is cool... I'm sure the real HS/LD folks laugh at us to. :)

Anyhow... play nice.

we now return you to your regularly scheduled AR vs AK debate, part CCXXIII :p

Reading James Thurber at around age 12 or 13 and thinking a bit will sorta take a fella out of Walter Mitty foolishness. Mostly, get all hooked up with a lady who doesn't bore you into that sort of stuff, and you won't need that Secret Life...

:D, Art

I have one colt and a bushmaster and nine ak's well eight just waiting for my class three one. from experience of having the real deal for six years and them jamming all the time i would go for the ak you could buy a couple ak's for a colt price
