Just curious how much ammo a modern US soldier using a shotgun would carry and what type? Are shotguns issued as primary weapons?

Example: For the M4 the ammo count (from my reading) is 7 mags or 210 rounds of M855 or M193.

i am sure that the amount of rounds carried by troops is different form unit to unit. our guys carry a mix of door breaching rounds and buck shot. most carry between 10-14 rds total.

no shotguns are not issued as primary weapons in any unit that i have been in or have worked with in the past, or any that i have heard of or known of. our shotguns have just the pistol grip and are used mostly and almost exclusivly for breaching doors.

7 mags is the standard load however we use and carry m855 62gr green tip, not m193 which is 55gr and was used in the old m16a1's.

additionally some folks like me carry more than the standard load, because we know what it is like to be in a fight and almost run out of ammo. not a good feeling.

I'm sure it is different by unit too. I carried a shotgun a couple of times, and usually about 20 rounds of buckshot with no breaching rounds.

Yeah, everyone carries more than 210. I think only people that don't leave the FOB too much (if you know what I mean) carry 210. I personally carried 10 mags. I knew guys that carried more than 400. As long as you can hump it, there is no such thing as too much ammo.

We had guys that would carry them as primary weapons - mission dependant. But, they were not primary weapons by MTOE - they were drawn out specifically for certain missions.

Yeah, point was made to me when I was still a teenager that guns don't work w/out ammo so balance out what you can reasonably carry, and do it!
