Another "gun in the river story"...

Kids Find Gun In The River, Police Urge Safety

Police and parents are warning folks to be careful after two guns were found in the Congaree River in the last two weeks. Over the past two weekends, people, including children, who were out playing in the river have discovered weapons and alerted police.

Michael Coombs’ son found a loaded assault rifle last Saturday and it turned out to be a missing weapon from Fairfield County.

West Columbia police say they responded to another similar call just the week before. That weapon, which was reported stolen in Sumter County, wasn't loaded.
But officers warn that guns can still be dangerous, even if they've been submerged in water.

“If they've not been there too long, the water may not have seeped in to get the gun powder wet, so it could possibly go off. The best thing to do is just let us know where it's at and we'll come and get it,†west Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall said.

Police say finding weapons in the river happens more often when the water is low, but they urge anyone who comes across a weapon anywhere, to leave it and alert law enforcement.
