.44WCF = .44/40 Being a tapered, somewhat bottlenecked case, no substitutions will work.

You are saying 44WCF and 44/40 can be fired from same weapon?

No, he's saying those are two names for the exact same cartridge. And he's correct.

By the by, "30 WCF" is more commonly called "30-30". Again, two names for the exact same cartridge.

And the .44 Russian can be fired in a .44 Special chamber. The latter is simply a "strectched" version of the former -- much like the .38 Colt, .38 Long Colt, .38 Special and .357 Magnum are simply longer and longer versions of the original cartridge. All four can be fired safely in a .357 chamber.

Just to pile on top, yes .44WCF and .44-40 are two names for the same cartridge and there is nothing else that can be fired in a .44WCF chamber. Any .44 convertibles that fire .44WCF(.44-40) and the .44Special will have two cylinders. The .44Spl can chamber and fire .44Russian and modern .44Colt.

Reason for the two names is that "WCF" stands for "Winchester Central Fire". Marlin wanted to chamber the popular cartridge but did not want Winchester's name on their guns so the moniker ".44-40" was born.

Well I guess you can shoot a 38 WCF ( 38-40 ) in a 44-40 revolver but don't expect any accuracy and you will over stretch the case. I know as I did it by accident once. Like a fellow cowboy shooter once shot a 44-40 round through his .45 colt revolver during a match and his 44-40 rifle jammed because it had a .45 colt round in it ment for his pistol. Got to keep your ammo straight for which guns they go in, is the lesson here. LM
