Walther P99 Compact. I cannot "make" it malfuction, it is very accurate, much more comfortable then a Glock and has traditional double action which I prefer. $450ish ain't a bad price either.

House o Kahr Firearms

I own both Glocks and Kahrs. Both are good designs but I give the edge to Kahr for concealment. It's less thick, better trigger (in my opinion), more size efficent, and more accurate when compared to the Glock 26. The only advantage I see in the Glock 26 9mm over the Kahr 9mm is ammo capacity (10+1 ver. 8+1) and weight (I don't own a poly frame Kahr).

I would add the HK P2000sk. Had a chance to play w/ one yesterday & now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to afford one!

I wish Glock would come out with a single stack slimmer version of the G26 or G19. Maybe something inbetween in size but thinner.

The walther (nice gun!), the HK and the Springfield XD are all considerably larger than the G26. The kahrs are smaller. While I like steel framed Kahrs (which are heavier than the G26, which weighs 26.5 oz loaded), I remain thoroughly unimpressed with their polymer versions.

Take a look at the Rohrbaugh R9S, alot smaller than all of them and higher quality, will fit in your pocket.

Kel-Tec P11
Kahr
S&W Chiefs Specials
Kiln-fired brick (competitor in the ergonomics category)
AMT Backup
Colt Pocket Nine
Borg Cube (competitor in the aestetics category)
Officer's ACP-sized 1911s

Are the Walther P99C, HK P2000SK, and SA XD9 Subcompact all bigger than Glock 26???

The other one that I am going to give a try is Taurus PT111 PRO model, it is pretty small looking and supposedly Taurus has worked out the problem with the Pro models.

OK. So I go down to my high priced spread retail gun shop. I look at a Taurus PT111. I mean not bad - a long trigger pull, but nice and light, and small. Next I pick up a Glock 26. Better trigger - yes. Is it $300 better? Well no - not to me. I wanted to look at a RAMI - they carry CZ, but did not have one RAMI. We talked breifly about the Springfield XD. I said, "Those get kind of steap - don't they?" The clerk said, "about the same as the Glock, but you get more stuff" Hmmm...I had to leave at that point to let the dogs out.

Is there more accessories you get with the Springfield? Are there any advantages to Springfield XD over Glock?

What are the closest competitors to the Glock 26?

If you insist on a 9mm then I would probably look at the Kahr PM9. Personally, I do not like Taurus pistols so I cannot recommend them (had a PT145 and hated it). Don't know anything about the XD. Never liked the look of the Walther pistols so I cannot recommend them either. Never tried a Kel-Tec either but I've heard that they take some work to make them reliable.

That being said, the closest competitors to the Glock 26 are the G27 and the G33, both of which are the exact same size. Those aren't 9mm though.

Yes, they are all bigger than a Glock 26. Compare them side by side in a shop and see for yourself.

$300 better? You have to be kidding. What were they charging for the Taurus? I can't imagine that you could sell those for more than $350 NIB on a good day. They wanted more than $600 for a glock 26? That's outrageous.

Here in Lousville you can buy a 9mm or .40 glock NIB for right at $500, or less if you know where to go. A used glock should cost no more than $400 stock, or $425 with night sights.

As for the "more stuff": I believe that Springfield is giving away holsters and extra mags with the XDs. The holsters look like junk (I've only held them in my hand, not used them) but an extra mag is an extra mag.

You won't find a handgun that has more options in terms of holsters than a Glock except maybe a 1911 or a jframe revolver.

XDs advantage over Glock? Well for most people it's simply the fact that it's made by Springfield. The XD has a grip safety, which appeals to different types of shooters, both experienced and new. I agree that it has a nice grip angle but I just don't care for the thickness or the finish. But my biggest hangup is the trigger. Some people love it. I like to shoot revolvers but on an auto I like a short reset. If you go for the XD, more power to you and I am sure it will serve you well. Just don't get so hung up on the hardware - software is where you need to put your time and energy.

Dominic - Yes there prices are outrageous. I don't even bother to look they are so high - its just a good place to look at guns - they carry several brands usually pretty well stocked. I think I can get a PT111 for around $280 locally, a glock more like $550 ?

goalie - no I don't have any glocks. I think my current guns are in my signiture.

I just got a Taurus PT111 Pro for $180. I'm going to show it side by side to Steyr S9 when it gets here. I almost got the XD subcompact too but it's abit too thick. I think in general, while length and height of frame/slide are important, it's the thickness that makes or breaks the carry comfort level. They should come out with a singlestack 1911-like width CCW subcompact.

Today I bought a Taurus PT111 Millenium Pro 9mm locally for $260. It was much cheaper than the Glock or Kahr and is a bit smaller than the Model 26 yet the magazine holds 12 rounds instead of 10. (It comes with two magazines.) Lifetime warranty, too.

The PT111 feels good in my hands and I love the sights. Never have been a Taurus fan but couldn't walk away from this deal - $20 off and it was the last one in stock. Fingers crossed that it's reliable...

Airpower - Good point about thickness.

Quentin - 20 years ago I think Taurus was inferior. I have a PT911 (which I'm looking to sell actually) - anyway, build quality, and design is excellent.

I'm leaning in the direction of the PT111, or XD sub-compact (3" barrel). I want to take a closer look at the XD. I love CZ's, but I think the RAMI will be too big for my CCW.

If I can not sell my PT911, I'll look at a minimalist holster - basiciallly the small strap/loop over the belt - see if that will work for CCW.
