John Correia (ActiveSelfProtection) says he has never seen a non-LEO defender need a spare mag in thousands of real life SD videos.
Added observation: On the ASP video of 4/20/21, Multiple Home Invaders Stopped By Armed Defender, you see a home-carry victim shoot to slide-lock empty and retreat to another room to reload, returning to fire more. Correia's comments are he considers this after the fact, and shifts to his advice to carry as many rounds as you can in your primary carry.
For me, it is more supportive of having your spare mag with you at all times.

Tom Givens advises carrying at least one spare because that may be your fastest recovery if you have a malfunction.

Tom Givens, a long time 1911 guy, who switched to a Glock G35 and then I believe a G17, is also famous for saying ...

"The 1911 is a one or two bad guy gun in a three or four bad guy world."

I carry a Springfield milspec in a desantis duo carry II holster (modified to be open top) IWB. I carry a reload in a Springfield factory leather OWB pouch.
For years I carried OWB with mostly galco combat master or similar leather holsters. Comfortable , but the IWB has the advantage of being adjustable for cant. I found just the right angle and I forget it's there until I put my hand on my belt line.
For a while I used several different double mag pouches, mostly open top galco. I like them but just happened onto the single mag pancake style I'm using now.

This thread got me to rethinking my magazine carry. My multi-tool case was a little bulky so I went searching on Amazon and decided to try these Creatrill mag holders. This is I think their medium-compact size. Fits the Sig P365 12 round magazines perfectly. I cut off the leather piece with the belt clip on one to make a perfect pocket carry. Wide enough that it won't rotate. It also fits the carpenters ruller pocket in my Carhart pants just perfectly.

This^.

The 6+1 SD pistols (G36/P938) usually get a spare mag in the front left or side pocket, while the service pistols (G23.4) usually do not, unless it's a bad place I'm goin'.

LEO's - are obligated to shoot their way into trouble.
Citizens - are only obligated to shoot their way out.

For the 6+1 SD pistol - Tactical reload.

Practice it.

I carry both IWB. It was harder for me to find a comfortable IWB mag carrier than it was finding an IWB holster.

I still generally keep a mag OWB on the off side for balance, but lately I've been tossing another on my left rear pocket, seems to work fine and hasn't been bugging my butt too much.

This summer when I wear lighter shirts I might go to back pocket only for the hot month up here.

When I carry IWB appendix I have a mag on my belt in an old Case knife sheath with a snap. Works pretty good.

I carry with a flush fitting mag for concealment and have a larger capacity mag as backup.
