Go to Iowa Firearms Coalition online http://www.iowacarry.org amd check out the info there. Some real good people in the forums too. You can get the law, the training requirements, where classes are. And all sorts of needed and interesting facts.

Where are you? I teach the course in NE Iowa but I have contacts all over the state. I can point you to the right person.

Essentially, take the class, get the permit. Iowa now honors all other state's permits, so if you have one somewhere else, it's good here. Also, a DD214 will work, as will proof that you participated in a competitive event.

The DD214 might be iffy - I just had a guy in Marion (Linn county) tell me that the Sheriff's Dept wouldn't accept his DD214 because it didn't specifically say that he had training with small arms.

He was actually in the same gun shop I was in, and came in specifically to ask about classes.

Obviously, I don't know if his story is true or not, nor do I know what his DD214 says. (Heck, I don't even remember if mine says anything about small arms and/or handguns.)

Recognition for small arms training can be found on a DD214 in Section 13 (Decorations Medals Badges Citations)

DD214 worked for me. But I also had the sharp shooting rifle and pistol medals lsited on the form.

- Just head to the sheriffs office,
- give them your dd214 if you have one (class completion certificate if you dont)
- pay them the $55, get picture taken and then wait until the very last day (30 days) they are required to respond to get your permit.

Im in SW Iowa, Cass county, took my DD214 in and had my permit in hand within 15 minutes!

I know the sherrif there. I used to live there and play golf with him a lot. Won't be any delays there. Metro counties - Pott.,Johnson, Blackhawk, Woodbury ect. Check the last presidential voting map. Slow processing in the BLue counties.

Going to the sheriffs office or calling them would be the quickest way to find out. Im sure they could give you info on classes in your area.

Maybe, maybe not. My sheriff in Blackhawk county is a Democrat, but had a reputation before the new law as effectively being "shall issue" and quick with permits. I was talking with a local FFL (a deputy incidentally) and I asked him about the Sheriffs stance on guns. He told me the Sheriff was as pro gun as he was and had no problems signing off on permits. Quite the opposite of, oh, say down in Johnson county.
