Just got a call from a telemarketer-turned-fund raiser for a Pennsylvania narcotics program. Caller gave the speech and said that todays drug criminals have easy access to high tech weapons that are a real problem. So, I said "what kind of high tech weapons?" He responds "Uzis and machine guns." I respond "full auto machine guns?" He says "yes" I said "High tech machine guns like the ones that have been around since WWI?" He responded with "Well, maybe not that old (missing the point)." I then said I was not interested and ended the call. Now I'm all for fund raising for various police entities but I really disliked the tactics of this call.

Pennsylvania, at least used to, have the highest number of registered, legal machine gun (real machine gun, Class III) owners of any state. And guess how many crimes were committed with them? None.

Most fund raisers, period, are scams. Including the "legitimate" ones.

I was involved with friends of the NRA. We raised money for women and
kids shooting sports and gave alot of money to Boy Scouts and 4H shooting
programs. Law inforcement and gun clubs could also submit grant applications.
Every year when we got together to go over the grants and hand out money
there were always plenty of Law enforcement applications wanting money for
all kinds of goodies that the city would not buy them. One year they wanted
night vision toys and bullet proof vests for dogs. I think they got the doggy
vests but they had "donated by the friends of NRA" printed on them.:D

It is hard to believe that anybody with any sense of how the world works or things that have happened in the resent past would think that a full-auto gun ban in the US would amount to anything.

Are the politicians to stupid to realize that when the Soviet Union fell apart that the little pieces began selling off the old Soviet millitary. There are boatloads of this stuff coming into this country from the old Soviet Union.

Wait a minute.. I forgot... these guys and gals smuggling these things in will turn them in........They will be illegal and we all know these people want to keep their good names.

I really hate the police fundraisers where if you make a donation, they'll give you a decal to put on the rear window of your auto to show your "support". Of course it's tacitly implied that such a show of "support" could be beneficial when you've been pulled over for a traffic violation. It's basically tantamount to institutionalized bribery.

I don't think this suprises any of us of course. I wish this could become a commonly known fact (I haven't verified its truthfulness, however, it seems obvious). The perfect proof that law-abiding citizens can be trusted with firearms, even "high-capacity fully-automatic black death machines".

Then we might want to be careful about that. I saw this thing by the Federal Government the other day that military-style semi-auto's (in the Brady Bunches terms 'assault weapon') and fully auto's account for not much of the violent crime out there, but that handguns account for almost every violent crime committed with a firearm. I'd hate to lose my handgun that I use for personal protection if that's then the next focus with everyone.

I agree. I think that con artists know that people are generally sympathetic to law enforcement
Or intimidated. People think "The police know my phone number and who I am. I'd better contribute"

Another scammer, those call like the police fund for widows an children, are all scams. If you want to donate to a real charity, ask your local LEW. I had one in NY, that used to call 2or 3 times a year, once he threatned my receptionist that something could happen to her if we didn't give a donation, we had two detectives look into it and "lay in wait" , of course no one showed up.

A good question to ask (and IIRC they are required to answer) is "What percentage of my donation will go to the charity in question?" Sometimes it's only 10 or 20% with the rest going to the telemarketers. These calls definitely increased after the national do not call registry came into being and they had to find some other way to bug folks at home.

You should have asked

"What percentage of my donation will go towards legislation to let me have a machine gun, too" or "How much do I have to donate to have a machine gun too?"

I read somewhere that you have a better chance of getting mauled by a Tiger than getting shot with a "machine gun".

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I heard about that in the paper! Something about a Valentine's Day massacre, and these crazy bank robbers named bonnie and clyde. I can't believe that's happening these days! At least we outlawed alcohol. That'll solve the crime problem!

Scams. You gotta admire their ingenuity. My wife got a call from some outfit wanting donations to supply Veterans with wheel chairs.

Wife: “Why don’t they get them from the V.A.?”
Caller: silence
Wife: “My husband works for the V.A. All a Vet has to do is present his 214 and sign up.”
Caller: ‘click’

Anything to play on someone’s sympathy or fear.

Well, of course they do. If they can get several kilos of dope...and are willing to do so...what would make the caller believe that other illegal contraband would be any different or less available? Money talks, after all...

I've got it! Maybe we should just ban dope and machine guns!

No, wait. Nix that last. We already did that about 75 years ago.

They also have easy access to ILLEGAL DRUGS!

What the hell is their point?

You beat me to it Zundfolge. Drug dealers have access to industrial quantities of controlled substances, and somehow they're not following all the regulations on those either. Is it at all surprising that they can get illicitly supplied weapons too?

actual mgs

the main reason criminals dont get or want MGs are it brings in the feds.as far as legal MGs Mass has or had 10,000 licensed owners might not be all MGs.you can actually look up the number for each state. :uhoh::confused:

I actually don't doubt that. Can't be that hard to smuggle a full auto AK on a ship or something.

...or just build one in your basement one weekend. Seriously, anyone can build a full auto AK. The thousands of AK builders out there are building semi-auto because that is what is legal, not because it is easier. You can bet that if, ultimately, the full auto ban is struck down, folks will refit with full auto parts.

They also have easy access to ILLEGAL DRUGS!

Time to ban all drugs so that we can get the illegal drugs off the street.

I think that most of those "police fund raisers" are scams

All of them as far as I know. I never knew a law enforcement organization that solicits by telephone, usually mail.

He responds "Uzis and machine guns."

As with anything else criminal, if you have enough money you can get anything you want.

Of course it's tacitly implied that such a show of "support" could be beneficial when you've been pulled over for a traffic violation.

Do something bad enough and the decal won't do anything. I've lived in about 6 states and in each one of them found it wasn't uncommon for local police and troopers to let you go with a verbal warning for a minor violation decal or no decal.
