When I was in the market for a .357 levergun, I narrowed my search down to the Marlin and the Puma 92. The Browning 92 is the cream of the crop hard to find and when you do they are usually $800.00 or more these days, The Winchester Trapper is also getting pricey and I all ready have one in .44 Mag.
I ended up getting a Marlin CB the fit and finish was much better than the Puma, but it was also more expensive. It is a great gun, 20" octagon barrel is just nice! And very accurate. As time passed I found a Puma 92 .357 at Big Five on sale and brought it home. It was more of a project rifle, ugly wood and a 20" barrel. I chopped it down to 16.25", stripped and refinished the wood, added new sights and made a nice little truck gun out of it. It to is extremily accurate and slick as snot.
I dont think you can make a wrong decision to tell you the truth!

How about considering something in an

historic replica lever gun made by Uberti. Check the Cimarron Arms, Taylors, and Uberti, USA websites and see what they carry.

twist rates

I'm looking at the Puma 92 and others in 38/357 or possibly .45. So far most posts say the Puma is a great value. However, the twist rates for Pumas in all calibers is 1:30, which sound pretty slow to me, while most others have 1:16 or so. I called Legacy and they report no accuracy problems. I asked Dave at Montana Bullet Works, and he suggests a max bullet weight of 141g in the 357, and 362g in the .45LC.
For CASS, the range is so short accuracy isn't a big deal, but for longer ranges I'm cautious. Any accuracy problems noted for Pumas, in the 75-125 yard range?

I just called Marlin. Order today and you'll get it in March 2009. they are running 4-5 months behind. Also they ONLY produce to order. They don't just make a numbered run. It's based on orders.

Not a problem if you want one in .45 Colt ... they're on sale at Impact Guns for $650 and they ship within 48 hours!!

Makes me want to get a second one but I'm thinking of another ... an 1895 in .45-70 ... the Cowboy version ... and only $12 more!!

:)
