Not that I need another caliber in the safe, but I'd sure love another CZ surplus/police pistol. :D

I have a CZ-52 with a 9mm barrel, but it would seem more proper to go with a Makarov or .380 but I don't know if the ballistics differ enough to put one above the other. Any insight would be appreciated!

An older (and presumably wiser) gentleman at the range let me shoot a couple mags out of his cheap JG Sales Bulgarian Makarov at the range last fall. I must say, that all steel gun with the 9x18 round was a joy shoot! The controls were easy to use, it was reasonably small to carry but still had enough heft and grip that it was comfortable to shoot. The trigger was entirely usable as well. I am sure the CZ would be great in that caliber as well.

The 9x18 is not any cheaper than 9x19 that I see, but that makes it nearly always cheaper to find than 9x17.

If someone was looking for a budget handgun (I nearly always, without exception insist on the $179 Maverick 88 shotgun if someone want a single gun for home defense), I would highly recommend one for an inexpensive entry to pistol shooting!

I have neither at the moment, but I'm considering a Cz82 because a) I like that communism dried up and blew away, and we get to enjoy the fruits of it ;) b) the ammo is cheaper and c) (or maybe a') the guns chambered in it are impressive -- Maks and Czs, esp.

I think I prefer (but not by a wide margin) my CZ 82 over my Baikal Makarov. my only complaint about the CZ is that the grips are just too darn wide. As a range gun it's a lot of fun.

I've got guns in both (Ruger LCP in .380 and a CZ-82 in 9mm Mak). Between the two, I think I'd rather shoot 9mm Mak. However, out of the same gun, I'd rather have the .380. Simple reasoning: I tend to go the the range and take some guns on an impulse. As such I buy a lot of ammo from Wal-mart. They carry .380 - they don't (currently) carry 9mm Mak. Most gun stores carry it, but they tend to charge WAY too much for it ($20-25 per 50), so it's still cheaper for me to buy .380 at Wally World vs 9mm Mak from a gun store.

If I had a bit more forethought and was going to mail order my ammo, the 9mm Mak would likely see more range time, but i just don't tend to think that way (that said, I don't tend to shoot the LCP a whole lot either - 99% of my range time is with 9x19mm or .22LR).

for the record, 9mm mak is 10 per box of 50 at any number of online sites. it is the cheapest centerfire pistol round

Have you got a 380 yet?

If so, you could get a CZ-83 and not have to add another cartridge to stock. It is identical to the 82 except for caliber.

If not, I'd surely get one of these over a Makarov. Makarovs have something like a 20 lb. DA trigger. But they're a bit more compact than CZ-82s.

CZ makes better guns. Go that route.

Yes, Hornady offers both XTP and the new FTX for defensive needs.

If you decide it suits you fine. You can add CZ nites.

Many a CZ83 or CZ83 has created a CZhead for life!
