Considering a Ruger Mini-14, but why?

I like the one I have and just added a Samson rail. It spends most of its life in the rack of mu UTV or on the ATV. I put a cheap red dot on it to see if I could improve my groups with it because the irons and my eyes aren't getting along. It's no match rifle and the best I ever got with it was a 2in group @ 100 yds. It's an older one I bought around 1980.
Waiting now for a Vortex Venom to mount on it. This was a 50 yd target I shot with irons and my handloads with 55 gr Dogtown bullets.

I think that's great for a little carbine. Factory spec is about what you get. I called them once. Haven't heard the words dog town for a while. Heck I'm still using z max the girls got me for x mass one year . Box's of 500.
How much did the strut help.
Great picture. And great open sight target. Don't let anyone say different.

You can make an old Mini more accurate or buy a newer version that many say does shoot pretty well. This is my 181 early version, that was a 4" gun that spent 20 years on a Charter Boat in the Gulf off Ft Walton Beach shooting sharks.
The Mini is simply a scaled down M-14 and accurizes the same as an M-14 or an M1A. Same trigger job, action job, glass bedding, barrel crowning, etc. The gas block ears can get cracked so should be checked on used guns. Ths one has an Accuracy International gas block as the original had all four ears broken. The 8" barrel shroud, stiffens up the whippy early barrel, recoil pad is to extend the length of pull. Stock has been cleaned up. Group was shot at 100 with 53 SMKs.

The strut helped shrink my groups @ 100yds by about 1.5" when I had the eyes to see the target. As soon as I get the other Red dot I'll play some with it and see if I can improve on it. Need to make an appointment with a eye dr. Because even with the red dot I'm seeing 2 dots and with irons I'm seeing 2 targets. Hard to decide on which one to shoot. My buddy said to try shooting between them.

Have the same issue. Have had macular degeneration for at least 25-30 years (88 now). Dr. put me on Lutein gelcaps, one per day when first diagnosed. Developed very slowly, but for the last few years I get the double image of red dots and even a phantom crosshair in scopes which has caused my groups tp go to pot. When you see your Dr. be sure to mention the double image and ask him about MD if he doesn't mention it.

There are two types of MD, wet and dry. Wet can be treated w/injections in the eye, no treatment for dry. Mine is dry type. Lutein doesn't cure, but at least in my case slowed progression for many years.

Thank you !!! I'll make an appointment after hunting season. I was told a yr ago by an optometrist that I had the onset of cataracts. But I'll get with an opthamologist this time.

When i put a muzzle brake on my Mosin. It tightened the groups up.

That attaches just like the Great Patriotic War (WW II as the Soviets called it) BraMit suppressor. It had only four machined parts, two rubber washers and used subsonic ammo. The range settings were roll marked on the suppressor body so the user knew how to set his sights. BTW, that mounting system was invented by the French in Bayonne, France. The socket bayonet technology is used today in almost every American household. Look at your KitchenAide mixer.

The BraMit was copied by the Germans who used a clamp-on system and the Finns who adapted it to lock onto the bayonet lug.

Good move! I was fortunate enough to have an opthamologist whose father had suffered MD and was very advanced in the field & detected mine very early. I believe the Lutein slowed progression considerably. Best wishes for good results.

My mini isn't the most accurate gun I have and I haven't done anything to it to make it more accurate. For me the mini is just fun. Feel's good in my hands and on my shoulder, eats any and every brand of ammo without a hickup, no recoil, just plain fun. I'll never get rid of mine, brings a smile to my face every time I shoot it.

Same for me.
