I have seen that there are a few different companies that make conversion barrels that turn your 40 into a 9mm or 357.

Why can't you go from 45 to 40 or smaller? Is it a pressure issue or what?

breech face size is the main thing, switching from a .40 case rim to a 9mm (.380) is a difference of .02" where it is a .05" difference stepping down from .45 acp. affects the impact zone of the primer, extractor engagement etc.

also most.45 versions of guns are built on a different frame as their smaller counterparts.

Mags won't work. Several companies do make 45/10mm conversion barrels, though.

A conversion kit is more common. It depends upon the parent case normally, unless the gun in question is like a TC or something.
