The raising cost of ammo has me looking hard at a 22. I can't make up my mind whether to get an Advantage Arms conversion kit or a dedicated 22 like a Ruger. Any reason why one's better than the other?

One advantage of a conversion kit is you get to keep using the SAME gun...so you're already used to it.

I have a Ciener for my 1911 Colt Government.

+1 on the conversion. A quality conversion is every bit as accurate as a dedicated .22. Every thing is the same as your serious pistol, grip, trigger, controls, etc. Only the recoil is missing. My conversion is even the same weight as my regular slide and barrel.

In the same boat as you, I went with a Marvel conversion for my 1911. I now have a gun that handles and feels just like my primary pistol, is as accurate as a premium .22LR (I use it for police league where it keeps pace with the Model 41's and Pardini's), and shoots bulk ammo (with a 10lb. spring) as reliably as target ammo.

You may not save a whole bunch of money if you buy a Marvel, but I feel the training benefit of using your work gun for another purpose is worth it.

i put a conversion on an old 70 series frame... there is a dedicated .22 for ya :)

I have both and shoot both. The conversion lets you practice with your gun and a dedicated .22 may be cheaper. Do like I did and go both ways. Here's my Kimber conversion on my Tactical Pro - it's a fun one...

I got an Advantage Arms conversion for my Glock 19 about a month ago. It's awesome, I would highly recommend it. The LE version I got has the same factory style sights as the Glock. It's more accurate for me than my 9mm slide, and I shoot my 9mm slide a lot better now after putting so many rounds out of the conversion.
I'm going to get one for my 1911 next, and then the AR.

Advantage Arms

Here's my completely unbiased opinion :D ...They even include a cleaning kit tucked neatly in that little box... My Glock 17:
