GALVESTON — A Corpus Christi man was in jail Wednesday charged with a crime that police officers said was either “brazen†or “stupid.â€

William Ehlers, 25, faces a burglary charge after a Wednesday night break-in at the Galveston police substation on Avenue S.

“This is a building that our officers are walking into and out of 24-7, so we’re not talking about anyone who’s taking the NASA test to be a rocket scientist anytime soon,†said police Lt. Walter Braun. “I mean, you’re talking about a building with police cars parked all around it.â€

A groups of patrol officers walked into the building about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday to find the door of the community service office open, Braun said.

“That was unusual and immediately suspicious, because the office closes around 5 p.m.,†he said.

The office houses the administration of bicycle patrols and other crime prevention programs.

Seconds later, as the officers stood in the foyer, they received a second surprise.

“They were discussing how to proceed when this man comes walking out of the training office, just down the hall,†Braun said.

The man was carrying a Taser, a police baton and a cell phone belonging to another officer.

The man surrendered to the officers without incident, according to police reports.

Officers searching the area around the building found an apparently intoxicated woman in a car. A check of the license plate revealed that the car had been reported stolen out of Corpus Christi, according to department reports.

Ehlers, 25, was in jail on Wednesday under $25,000 bond. He faces a charge of burglary of a building, which carries a possible jail term of 180 days to two years, as well as a fine of up to $10,000.

Police also arrested Ehlers’ fellow Corpus Christi resident, Stephanie Hass, 22, on a charge of public intoxication, which carries a possible fine of up to $500.

The saying I go by is "stupid People are alive because it is illegal to shoot them"

otherwise there would be a lot of 12 gauge shotgun blasts to the face reported in the news. And when the trial occured, all the defendant would have to say is "your honor, the plantiff was ##$%ing stupid"

    Case dismissed defendant not guilty

I dunno, seems like a pretty good plan to me. I can just imagine his thought process:

"Hmmm, the cops are always on the look out for a break-in. But what if I break in to THEIR office! It would be the LAST place they would suspect! BRILLIANT!!"

What scares me is the bad guy parked a stolen car in front of the police station, with a drunk inside, and the only reason they find him is because he left the door open???

"We should have public executions for that caliber of stupidity"

    Start with congress, please

In Texas, carry of a police baton is illegal in itself. There's another charge.

Maybe if he'd dressed up in an appropriate police uniform and claimed to be from another station...

FRIENDLY, there are easier ways to get a taser, a baton, and a cell phone than stealing them from a police station.

I believe it was Mark Twain who said "The problem isn't that there are too many stupid people in the world, the problem is that lighning isn't distributed correctly". :)
