My seven year old and I were perusing an old copy of Boys Life. In the magazine there was an ad for a "Official BSA Pocket Knife" complete with can opener and a corkscrew. Since I have owned many SAKs with corkscrews It didn't register that I was looking at a Boy Scout Knife with a corkscrew. However, my seven year old noticed and asked "Dad, why would a boy scout need a corkscrew? He is pretty worldly but not a wine connoisseur so I asked him what a corkscrew would be used for....the little guy explained exactly how to use one(of course he learned all this while watching Mom and Dad booze it up). I gave him the "Dad has no idea" explanation. "Well Son, back in the olden times root beer and sasparilla came in bottles just like wine does today. When the scouts would stop for provisions on their treks they needed something to open up those bottles." You should have seen the look he gave me. He replied, "Baloney, the scoutmaster needed those corkscrews to open up their wine!":D

Smart boy. Watch out as he gets older. ;)

I think some of the Scout knives in Europe still carry cork screws. Their's are obviously for wine.:D

In times gone by many liquid items were sealed in bottles and metal using corked containers to increase shelf life. A multiplex (old term) pocket knife was supposed to be used for almost anything. Screw tops were rare and hard to get. I remember mom saving every mason jar and lid to use again. Saying a corkscrew knife was only for opening wine is like saying like saying alcohol is only for getting drunk and ignoring all other uses.

Everyone knows it was used if the cork got stuck in your canteen! :D

Be prepared. Scouting is international. You may meet French scouts, better yet French GIRL scouts.
