I live on a corner lot which not only is more yard to mow, but kinda sucks for security. My side yard is a blind spot from inside the house, it is on the other side of my garage. But I have a nosey neighbor who lives across the street who calls us when she sees anyone doing anything suspicous in the area. I guess you could call her the unofficial neighborhood watch.

I also have a large shed in the side yard. I have a flood light on it, but I cannot see anything unless I leave the house.

Any ideas of how to make this area more secure?

Forgive me, but I'm having a hard time picturing how you are describing your house's layout.

Your blind spot (I assume you mean side of the house) is on the other side of your garage. Wouldn't that be true if your house was on a corner lot or not?.

Are you saying that the side of your structure isn't defined by the side of your garage...that there is a set back from the street to a fence and then additional yard before the side of your garage?

What is the distance from the street to the side of your garage?...from the fence to the side of your garage?

Is the shed between the garage and the fence?

If you are concerned about this dead spot, why not just eliminate the side yard?

1- Stay on good terms with nosey neighbor
She seems to be doing a good job of letting you know whats going on in the area, and will most likely call if she see's anything odd around your home.

2-Seriously consider the camera option
Seems the best option to visually check without exposing yourself.

3-Get a dog if you like pets and your yard is fenced.
Dogs don't do anygood if they're off roaming the neighborhood and not a realistic idea if you don't like all the responsibilty of owning a pet.

The blind spot is the side yard, with a corner lot you have a front yard, back yard, and a side yard. Only corner houses have side yards, at least in my neighborhood they do. That is where my blind spot is.

corner lots are easier to secure, less hiding places for hoodlums.

Just be sure to make it so there's no effective hiding places...short-very low bushes helps as well as lots of lighting.

Corner lot here.

Toss in a street light across the street and the places to hide on the perimeter of my property are slim.

Toss in a 90lb doberman and folks don't linger along our property line (even the fenced bits).

Roses, blackberries or similar and pea gravel (try walking on it quietly) can give you a head's up as will motion-sensor lighting. Coupled with a fence and a dog that barks - you should be good to go

I also live on a corner lot.

Statistically corner lots are burglarized more than the other lots.

I have my entire lot fenced in and inside the fence we planted bushes.

I would suggest either cactus or thorny bushes.

Also depending on your situation dogs are good alarm systems but only work if you are home to hear them.

I've thought of getting a camera system but wouldn't the thieves just steal the unit the pictures are saved to?

Please note that I am only concerned about burglaries when I am not home.
