Kicking around the idea of looking into a suppressor for my Glock 17. I am wandering what the total investment would be excluding the actual suppressor. Interested in the price of tax stamp and all other administrative red tape.

Passport photos = ~$20-30
Fingerprints = ~$30-50
Tax Stamp = $200
Threaded Barrel = $220-250 (if your glock isn't threaded)
Suppressor = $500-1,000
TOTAL = $970-1,530

A lot of it depends on the suppressor you buy and whether you have a threaded barrel already.

Good point. Looks like I need to decide between my marriage and the suppressor at this point lol.
Looks like the suppressor will be in the 5 year plan.

The suppressors I'm looking at are $1500+. Until the're non-NFA, they will always be made of uber expensive, life lasting, materials.

Too rich for me right now. I've got a 3 gun "want list" a mile long that comes 1st.

FWIW, I like the Glock 26 as a suppressor host- you can put any double stack Glock 9mm mag in it, and the shorter slide/barrel keeps the overall length down quite a bit.

It's not a cheap game to play, but worth it. Of course, the only threaded barrel I've bought was for the G20, since it's never a bad idea to get away from the poly rifling and crappy chamber support of stock Glock tubes. Otherwise, I thread my own and make adapters.

But yeah, that's something to think about if you haven't the capability. Threaded barrel are only available for popular handguns, and can easily run north of $250. Having stock barrels threaded and extensions made will be in that arena, too, if you can find a Smith or machinist who'll do it; a lot of guys won't for > 9mm bore. I do, but it gets spendy when the slide also has to be modified for the adapter with thin walled .40 or .45 cal barrels.

What in the world are you after? Top shelf pistol cans can be had for $800-$1000 no problem. The SiCo Osprey 45 is one of my favorites, run about $850

My father in law and my brother both have center fire suppressors and both say that after the novelty wore off, they rarely get used and they wished they'd spent that money on something else.

I have a Rimfire suppressor and it was only $200. So I'm in it for a total of about $450 and I use it all the time. I can burn through 500 rounds of ammo quickly and much more cheaply than my 9, 40, or 45 calibers.

Sounds like what happens when folks only have one or two host weapons and/or just one can that's only suitable for a few calibers, so have to bring and use hearing protection for range trips anyway. It's a different game when you have numerous guns with threaded tubes and multiple cans. Again, not a cheap game to play, but well worth it, IMO.

I live in a rural area, but my neighborhood is not so rural that I can be out there for hours blasting without getting complaints. With suppressors, though, I can shoot sub sonic stuff all day long and no one even knows. It also takes enough bite out of the super sonic rounds that I can get away with quite a bit more in an area that is primarily 5-10 acre residential ag lots. The wonderful little TBAC takedown .22 can drops my .22 Hornet to about the volume of a .22 Short, and .45 ACP through the SiCo Hybrid is a dull thud that's barely detectable from 100 yards away. .22 LR subs through that TBAC can are movie quiet, the bullet impact on wood far louder than the report. I don't have it yet, but get to play with a TBAC Ultra 9 that takes full power .300 win mag down to completely hearing safe levels.

My biggest extra expense was having to load a lot more jacketed bullets to shoot suppressed pistols as the hardcast lead I'd mostly been shooting just don't get along with suppressors, unless you get a "take-apart" suppressor that you can clean, but needing to clean the suppressor after fewer rounds than I clean my gun was a non-starter for me.

I started with a pistol can, but have found we use the rifle cans far more often. My wife was afraid to shoot a 5.56 AR because of the muzzle blast, but after putting a suppressor on it she's now having a great time banging steel at 300 yards. Again she has a hard time with 9mm pistols because of the muzzle blast, but shooting it suppressed she hits like it was a .22lr.

I guess you could say the biggest upside to getting some suppressors is its made my wife enjoy shooting a whole lot more!

Passport photos = ~$20-30 Take your own for free with any of the dozens of free apps on iPhone and android.

Or you buy through a Silencer Shop Powered By dealer and prints are scanned for free.

@dogtown tom: where were you last year when I spent money on passport photos and fingerprints? :thumbup: I didn't realize you could fingerprint yourself, I just assumed you had to go to the sheriffs dept for that.

Thank you for that information.
