Local here, in Concord, NH...I'd keep an eye on this! Are they going to raid, negotiate or what? The guy's off the grid, so there's nothing they can shut off... and the house has eight-inch cement walls, plus there's armed supporters inside.

Also from a few hours ago:

Did they actually not pay tax at all, or did they evade taxation by lying on their returns? I curious because usually neither lead to a prison centence now as the IRS is trying to better their rep and usually hands out fines now and even has programs for those who have tax problems....I wonder how far this will go.....hope Janet Reno gets nowhere near a microphone! The guy is DOOMED! She is a bloodthirsty wench!

Here's a more complete article, from the prosecutor's perspective, of course.

    http://www.wmur.com/news/10784243/detail.html

I don't know if they're guilty or not, or of what, I'm just afraid that Feds + fortified house + stubborn non-tax-paying libertarian is going to end badly... they have to make an example of him, don't they? :/

    Waco? Ruby Ridge?

    Not even.

The Feds lied like cheap carpets to find a reason to attack the Branch Davidians. Ruby Ridge was a a similar hose out for the supposed purpose of serving a warrant for failure to appear. In both these cases the victims were minding their own business when the Law came down on them.

This is entirely different. A guy panics, skips out on his own trial (leaving his wife to face the music) and holes up with his guns. Odds are if he hadn't been an idiot he could have avoided the trial and probably would have just ended up paying the back taxes plus fines.

I just hope the police can winkle him out of his shell without anyone getting hurt.

Manedwolf: Some aspects are the same as wacko, but there are more differences than similarities IMHO. And YES...they have to make an example of him. I cant even fathom how much money the government would lose if they let this one slip.

Sounds like he should have hired a tax attorney to negotiate with the IRS and make sure they didn't get screwed around. It may be too late now.

I think it will be peaceful

I think that it will be peaceful. Every article I have read has an official saying something sensible like "It's not like he is a dangerous felon. He didn't pay his taxes. Lets keep it in perspective".

I am interested to see what they will do, but I imagine something like an embargo. No one goes in, and if he leaves he will be arrested.

    It's just taxes,

but yeah, now that he made a federal case out of it (pun intended), they probably won't roll over and go away. They'll probably just starve him out. Cut off the water, unless he has a well. The OP said he's off the grid, so must be generating his own power. If so, that takes fuel. Not enough sun this time of year in New Hampshire to go solar. How much fuel does he have? Sooner or later, he'll get tired and surrender. The feds can rotate his keepers. And all those friends he has in there with him are gonna eat his food stash that much sooner.

If the IRS only popped them for a $3,300 fine as the article states, then the amount they were originally fighting over wasn't that much to begin with. I know, I know, it ain't chump change to most of us. But to them, not necessarily so. Another article, here: http://www.comcast.net/news/national/index.jsp?cat=DOMESTIC&fn=/2007/01/18/565344.html, said she's a dentist. Also, the original article says they were were charged with conspiring to hide large income transactions so as not to pay taxes. Now, I work hard, as many of you do, and I pay my fair share. Personally I resent it when someone, especially someone who can well afford to pay the tax, tries to hide the income and not pay their fair share. That puts the burden back on all of us.

I'm not wishing ill on anyone, but I do think he's dug himself into a really big pile and has no one to blame but himself.

And, to answer the original question: No, it won't be another Waco or Ruby Ridge.

It sounded like that was back in the 90's, then just flat out quit paying since then. If she is a dentist, then they could owe a HUGE amount. Not to mention it states there were a few large transaction they attempted to cover up.

I was stupid a long time ago, and didn't file for 4 years. They offered me a payment plan, and to waive the penalties to clear it up.

This guy has gone too far.

The JBT's are polishing their MP5's.

What a man...sends his wife to fight the court battle, while he hides at home...taxes suck, but we all have to pay them...just another "gun toting wacko" (more media fodder)screwing things up for the rest of us.

Their little MP5 squirt guns won't save them from getting their heads blown off by a rifle, assuming that's what he has. And they know it. They'd be awfully stupid to just kick in his door, use a flash-bang, and try to run in there. He's probably behind cover, waiting with his rifle.

The first thing they'll do is gas him. If he has a mask, then that won't work right away. But if he doesn't have one, then gassing him will probably make him surrender.

In any event, I salute this man's courage and am a little disappointed in those on this thread who are calling him names. He's exactly right about this:

If more Americans were like him, we'd still have a free country.

I wish I had his Guts and Determination

I respect his stance. When I see how distant Government has become, I too would like to find a way to stop paying taxes. Who is supposed to audit the Government? I doubt they have been doing their job, whoever they are!

Yeah, pretty sad they let it get to this point. She had a high paying job and could've easily paid that if they'd taken care of it back in the day. The husband sounds like the real kook. Now they're going to die in a blaze of gunfire and flash bangs.
