Couldn't decide between a 7mm mag or a 300 win mag...

    so I'm getting a 30-06!:D

Almost every forum I read touting the pros and cons between the two eventually came around to including the 30-06 as well. For me, the main factors in coming to this decision were:

    1. Ammo cost is much less for 30-06. I don't reload.
    2. Recoil was more than I wanted to deal with on the 300 win mag. 7mm mag recoil is very close to the 30-06.
    3. The 30-06 has a huge range of factory loads available, and the ammo can be found at any country store.
    4. People were killing elk, caribou, bear and moose with the 30-06 long before magnums entered the picture.
    5. I enjoy going to the range year-round, except for the dead of summer in Texas, and the 300 win mag mag recoil and ammo cost of both the 7 and 300 would prevent that.
    6. With my 243 and 270, I have a nice range of calibers that will meet any of my needs in the lower 48, which is where I see my hunting range being limited due to finances.

I hope this helps someone who might be going through the same internal struggle. I cam very close to the 7mm mag before common sense prevailed.

It will be a new Winchester M70 in either a Featherweight or a Sporter. I have two new Featherweights and love everything about them. I'll mount a Buckmasters 3x9 40mm and hopefully give an initial report next week.

If I am off the mark in any of my reasons, give me your logic. It won't change my mind, but perhaps it will help someone else.

Wise choice..I pretty much agree with everything you said....and I own three 30-06 rifles :D
When I did want really step up, I went directly to the 338 Win Mag.

338 win mag. That seems like the next true step-up from the 30-06 in my mind as well.
